I’m having a difficult time with this for some reason 😦 I’m a mother myself and know she is our role model for the perfect woman and mother. Besides praying the rosary, anyone have advice?

Don’t worry about it.

Don’t give up on the Rosary. It will bring you closer to her! It has for me and I’m sure for others as well. I talk to her everyday - in my car, doing chores, before I go to bed, while at work, etc. etc.

Every morning I say to her: “My Queen, My Mother, I give myself entirely to thee, and to show my devotion to thee, I consecrate to thee this day my eyes, my ears, my mouth, my heart - my whole being without reserve, wherefore, good Mother as I am thine own, keep me and guard me as thy property and possession. Amen”

I feel her presence with me all the time and you will too.

meditation and constant conversation is a great way.

For example, once I was praying the rosary with a group of women with our children. Every few minutes one of us would have to get up and tend to a little one. And, all of us had our eyes on the children at the same time we prayed.

I was feeling frustrated and I thought, “Mary could pray in peace without children all over her!. All she had was the one child who was perfect!!!”

Then, I had the realization (I’d say a Holy Spirit moment) that Mary’s house was filled with children all the time. Of course it was! All the other moms would send their kids over to her. Plus, the kids would naturally want to be with her.

So I had a peak into Mary’s daily life. Plus, right now, I’m realizing that Mary would like me send my kids over to be near her. Yea!

Another time, I was praying the first joyful mystery. I was feeling kind of bored about it, trying to conjure up some meditative thought. So, I prayed distractedly, “Mary, okay, the Annunciation. I’ve prayed it a hundred times. Give me something new. So, you said, ‘yes’. Okay.”

Then–I felt in my heart, “but all the daily yeses I said prepared me for the big yes.”

Then I realized that I had to say "yes’ to all the tedious chores and duties of daily life. It would prepare me for the big yeses that God will ask of me!

See, just have a conversation–simple little thoughts in quiet times. Mary will show you.

Hello,

I don’t think there is any one surefire way. Different things work for different people. I do believe a common thread is praying the Rosary. Say it every day. Like Father Corapi quips, “Just do it!”.

If you like to read, True Devotion to Mary by Saint Louis de Montfort is a perennial classic. As is the Glories of Mary by Saint Alphonsus Ligouri.

Try meditating upon an image of the Stabat Mater or Immaculate Heart while praying the Rosary.

Pray to Mary “Dear Mother, help me to love you so that I may come to Jesus through you” - or something similar.

Do the First Saturday Devotions.

Don’t give up. Perseverance in difficulties is of enormous benefit - offer it up in reparation for the offenses and blasphemies committed against the Immaculate Heart of Mary.

I hope that this helps.

Wow, what an insight – thanks Leonie!

JMJ-cooler — quote – Try meditating upon an image of the Stabat Mater or Immaculate Heart while praying the Rosary. quote

What is Stabat Mater or Immaculate Heart?

Pray the Rosary is part of getting closer to Her, but it is important to know what other saints and others say about Her role and Her love:

1- The Reed of God by Caryll Houselander ( I just purchased this book and recommended by someone)

2- True Devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary - by Saint Louis De Montfort ( I read this book and it is awesome! )

3- The Secret of the Rosary - by Saint Louis De Montfort. (Another awesome book)

Non-nitpicky comment –

You may be drawn more to other saints, too. I mean, maybe you’d have more luck getting to know St. Joseph.

Nitpicky comment in re: “Stabat Mater is Latin for Sorrowful Mother.”

Um… not quite. I can understand why someone would think so; the hymn translations of “Stabat Mater Dolorosa” sure sound like it. But “stabat” means “she stood”. It’s the “Dolorosa” part that means sorrowful.

So “mater dolorosa” means “sorrowful mother”. 🙂

Stabat mater dolorosa
iuxta Crucem lacrimosa,
dum pendebat Filius.

literally means:

The sorrowful mother stood
close by the Cross - tearful -
while the Son hung (on it).

You’re right - I should avoid translating Latin when I am tired. 😃

Watch the Passion of Christ (directed by Mel Gibson) if you haven’t already and if you have, watch it again.

Mary, walking along side of her Son, watching him suffer, wiping up His blood after the scourging, seeing Him as a child, saying I’m Here to Him over and over again…brings tears to my eyes.

Then, mediate on the Sorrowful Mysteries for the rest of Lent.

God bless.

People mean well here. They have good advice. But ultimately you will have to find what works for you. I had problems with Marian Doctrine up until January 2007. She appeared to me in a dream and helped me finish the Rosary, the last 2 decades of the Glorious Mysteries. After that I bent over backwards to say the daily 5 mysteries as outlined by Pope John Paul II, the Great. I’m not perfect and do not expect to be, but I can surely shoot for it. I have consecrated my life to the Blessed Mother. I’m a man, but I am very close to her. I feel her presence as I do my guardian angel, who I have also seen. No, I’m not bipolar or suffering other mental disorders. I’ve had my head examined…🙂

I suggest that when you say the Hail Mary you say it slowing with pauses after each line. Also read the gospels on her frequently…mostly Luke. Read Revelations 12 (without looking I believe this is right). Read Genesis when God banishs them from the Garden. Read about the Queen Mother of Solomon, Bethsheba. Read theology about her. And what really helped me was “Hail Holy Queen” a series that was played on EWTN but it is downloadable, about 5 or 6 hours on the subject. Protestants have sterilized the Traditions passed down from Christ regarding these things. That’s the problem with distance from the moment of the conversion in the early Church. It was commonly believed from the beginning. I’d also suggest googling some Orthodox material. They also have a great devotion to the Blessed Mother, our mother. THEOTOKOS>God Bearer. Read some of the catholic.com material on the subject, which also helped me. Books are great, but you can get it in bits and peaces and shoot slowly towards expanding your reading later.

Another thing that help me was to learn to say the Rosary in Latin, which I’ve only been doing for a year now. I suggest Learning the Hail Mary in Latin first. Say each line as if you truly mean it.

Ave Maria,…Gratia Plena
Dominus tecum
Benedicta tu in mulieribus
et benedicta fructus ventris tua

Sancta Maria…Mater Dei
ora pronobis pecadoribus in mulierieribus
nunc et in hora mortis nostrae

Spelling is off and I know it better when I concentrate on it. I’ve learn all the prayers of the Fatima Rosary. The only thing left to learn now is the last prayer O God, whose only begotten son… That’s just a matter of memorization. But as you memorize force yourself to learn what each word means. That’s why it’s taking so long. I figure she’s been around for me along time, the least I can do is learn to think of her intensly, realizing she’s there, just like my guardian angel.

During the Mass, imagine…no REALIZE the Blessed Mother’s presence, with all the Angels and Saints. That is what we beleive. It’s what the Church teaches.

Further, realize that a relationship between anyone takes time to nurture. There may be times when you don’t feel so close to you hustband. But then you need to take the time to nurture that relationship. The same is true with Mary and your angel. I see going to weekday mass in particular as taking my Guardian Angel to see His fellow Angels, Saints and the Blessed Mother as well as the most important to us, Jesus Christ together with the Holy Spirit and the Father. It may take a while [life time] to fathom this, but it is awsome. I have to remind myself constantly of all the Angels and Saints presence.

Warning. There are also evil spirits out there. Demons trying to cause us to stumble. I’ve also seen demons. Very scary. But you must know that we have authority over them. Once I hopped in bed with my sleeping wife. In the shadow a face appeared and then raissed out of the shadow with a very ugly evil face. It was small, but vile. I just stared right back and called upon the Angels from heaven and the Blessed Mother to pray for me. I immediately prayed to God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit to help me, protect me, etc. The significance is that my wife and I were having problems. In our conversion there were many things that kept cropping up. I was once a seminarian and while I was discerning returning to my vocation to become a priest, her family proselytized me. My vocation was taken away from me and it took many years to come back home. My wife was not open to me on many levels, but ever since her Catholic conversion she has struggled for many reasons to deep to go into. The point is that I believe a demon was preventing her from opening up. The demon fled our bedroom airborn of course. Yes, I was scared and begged God to protect me along with the Angels and Saints to pray for me. As I learned more about Mary, I discovered that she commands the Army of Angels. I still hang onto my rosary at night for obvious reasons. I get scared sometimes but have to concentrate intensly on Jesus. I ask Mary to show me Jesus. That’s what she does for us. Long story short, some people have gifts of tongue, prophesy, etc. I don’t konw what this is called. But it has been awsome and scary at the same time. This happens periodically throughout my life.

I’ve felt the loving presence of Christ, the Holy Spirit and even God the Father, holding me. It makes you feel like a child. Special. I saw my Guardian Angel in a very bad wreck, remarkably walking ;pp;away unscathed in a wreck that I frankly should have resulted in death. I walked away. Even have the pictures to prove it. I hope to write a book on these experience one day after my family settles down from our extreme conversion experience.

I also suggest reading the Liturgy of the Hours. If that’s too much then get the Magnificat, that’s what my wife reads. It’s awsome. The main thing is that you have to speak to our Blessed Mother, Mary throughout the day. I’m trying to work on a closer relationship with Joseph now that I see how He is supposed to be my Saint as a father.

Latin Rosary

unavoce.org/ltrose.htm

AVE MARIA, gratia plena,
Dominus tecum.
Benedicta tu in mulieribus,
et benedictus fructus ventris tui, Iesus.

Sancta Maria, Mater Dei,
ora pro nobis peccatoribus,
nunc, et in hora mortis nostrae.
Amen.

Writing and saying are 2 different things.
If you know where I can find the name of the Luminus mysteries in Latin please let me know. No translators please, I can do that.

I have found that getting closer to Mary
requires me to contemplate her life. Deeply.
How to do that, when there is so little DIRECTLY about
her in the bible?
Thank God for those who have ALREADY
done the study and contemplation and provide
the fruits of their labors to us.

A wonderful book, I found, is

MARY OF NAZARETH by Federico Suarez.
That’s FEderico, not FRederico.
He is a priest of Opus Dei and one whose writings
seem almost inspired by the Holy Ghost.

It’s one of the best and most enriching books I have ever read about the Virgin Mary. It is available at Amazon.com
God bless,

That’s exactly right. The point I was getting at is to slow down and contemplate the life of Jesus through Mary. We do that by visualizing Jesus through Mary’s eyes. And further we see Mary’s life while she takes us to Jesus.

Say each devotion with your heart, not just your mouth.

Hello,
Writing and saying are 2 different things.
If you know where I can find the name of the Luminus mysteries in Latin please let me know. No translators please, I can do that.
Get it straight from the horse’s mouth. From Pope John Paul II’s Apostolic Letter Rosarium Virginis Mariae (in Latin ;)):

Lucis mysteria
  2. Eius in Baptismate apud Iordanem;
  3. in sui ipsius autorevelatione apud Canense matrimonium;
  4. in Regni Dei proclamatione coniuncta cum invitamento ad conversionem;
  5. Ipsius in Transfiguratione ac denique
  6. in Eucharistiae institutione, quae nempe sacramentalis est paschalis mysterii declaratio.
The same paragraph in English:

The Mysteries of Light
  1. Moving on from the infancy and the hidden life in Nazareth to the public life of Jesus, our contemplation brings us to those mysteries which may be called in a special way “mysteries of light”. Certainly the whole mystery of Christ is a mystery of light. He is the “light of the world” (Jn 8:12). Yet this truth emerges in a special way during the years of his public life, when he proclaims the Gospel of the Kingdom. In proposing to the Christian community five significant moments – “luminous” mysteries – during this phase of Christ’s life, I think that the following can be fittingly singled out:
    (1) his Baptism in the Jordan,
    (2) his self-manifestation at the wedding of Cana,
    (3) his proclamation of the Kingdom of God, with his call to conversion,
    (4) his Transfiguration, and finally,
    (5) his institution of the Eucharist, as the sacramental expression of the Paschal Mystery.

humm, I was posting and my post just disappeared into thin air:shrug:
Anyway, what I was saying is that the Sorrowful Mother did it for me, I found that when I was very small that I could relate to her in that way as it made me very sad that she had to undergo so much sadness for what her Son, Jesus was suffering for us. I understood that she knew exactly why He was going through what He was going through-for love of US and that she also loved us. I had very devout parents and all of my relatives were also devout Catholics and all of our friends, etc…Once when at the Stations of the Cross as we sang, …“At the Cross her station keeping, stood the mournful Mother weeping, close to Jesus to the last.” (I lost it.) I couldn’t take it anymore. I loved my own Mother so much and she helped me to know and love the Blessed Mother and if she was sad, well, I was too. I guess it was then that I realized how much she loved us too, (I already knew and understood how much Jesus loved us, but it was probably at that moment that I fell in love with His Mother too, I knew then that she was also my Mother. (I understood Jesus’ words from the Cross, “Behold your Mother.”) I ask her intercession in all things, she always leads all to her Son!!
(thats why I am allhers)

Thank you all sooo much for your replies!! Great advice 👍 I know I have to find my own way, but your ideas are a great start. I had no idea how to even start except to pray the rosary. I’m excited to look into the books you all suggested as well.
