I know that my wife missed a Mass a little while ago and has since not been to confession or communion. If I mention it she gets a bit funny, other than pray what more can I do?

Get her to read this:

DECALOGUE OF MERCY
(Dictated by Our Lord to Servant of God Sr. Benigna Consolata Ferrero, September 12, 1915)
  1. I am the God of all Mercy.
  2. I seek nothing so much as to exercise Mercy continually.*
  3. To exercise justice is for Me to go against the current; it does violence to Me.**
  4. The door of My Mercy is never closed; it is always ajar; however lightly it is touched, it opens; even a little child can open it, or an old man who has lost his strength.
  5. The door of My justice, on the contrary, is shut and locked; and I open it only to him who compels Me to do so; but I never open it spontaneously.
  6. Once the soul has crossed the threshold of the door of My Mercy, she falls into the power of Love, who employs every possible means to hinder her from escaping, and to attract her to love her new abiding-place.
  7. Having become the happy prisoner of Love, Love sets her at liberty, but only within the precincts of love; because if the soul should issue forth from this enclosure, she would meet death. Love does not prevent her departure, but he averts it and this is the bridle that he puts upon her.
  8. The more evil the state to which the soul is reduced by the sins of the past, by her disorders and passions, so much the more pleased is Love to have so much to accomplish in her.
  9. Souls the most miserable, the most weak, the most infirm, are the best clients of Love, the most desired by the divine Mercy.
  10. These souls, thus become, as it were, the predilette [favourite] of God, will, like so many living monuments, exalt and magnify the multitude of His mercies, sending up to God the reflections of living light, His own light, which they have received from Him during their mortal life- the multitude of kindnesses God has made use of to conduct them to eternal salvation. These souls will shine like previous gems, and will form the crown of the Divine Mercy.

I can completely relate to your situation. I have shared your thoughts and concerns in the past. That said, I mean the following with all respect and kindness (and concern for your peace of mind and happy marriage):

It is not our job to police our spouses. We support, love, and lead by example. In due time, it will resolve itself or the appropriate door to communication of a deeper matter will open. As difficult as it may be, just show her your love by giving her space to work on her spiritual relationship.

You’ll both be in my prayers.

Be the example, and pray for her. Be gentle. No one likes to be harassed. No matter how well intentioned you may be. You could drive her away from it.

Try asking her to come along with you the next time you go. Let her know she will not be telling the Priest anything he probably hasn’t heard before. Let her know also that there is still the option of the screen as well as face to face. Remind her of all the graces she will be receiving from the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Remember you cannot force her; it is her decision. Keep praying for her. Praying for you & your wife.

I also have the same problem with my wife not going to confession and communion. She seem to have convinced herself that it isn’t necessary. She is very stubborn and can get mad if I ask her to go. I pray for her a lot and I would appreciate prayers from others if anybody out there doesn’t mind.

As the other posters have said, be gentle when mentioning it. I also agree with the suggestion that you invite her to come with you the next time you go to Confession.

With all due respect, it isn’t really your place to ask your wife to go to Confession, unless it’s “I’m going to Confession, would you like to come with me?”. As I said to the OP, be gentle in your approach.

Pray. Love her. Don’t nag.

I agree.

I agree with your opinion, sort of. I really am being gentle, I hope. I ask her to please consider going to confession. I want her to make the choice to go so I decided to leave it up to God to convince her because I can’t seem to do it and I don’t want to be too pushy. I pray the rosary for her often. Thanks for the advice.

And there’s your problem. It’s all in the tone. Even if you say it in the most gentle and loving way you possibly can, she’s probably hearing “You’re a SINNER and must get yourself to confession.” Because she already knows she needs to go. She’s just reluctant for some reason.

Try a simple “I’m going to confession. Want to come along?” “OK then. Is there any errand I can run for you while I’m out?” “Love you. Be back about 5.” Or something along those lines. A simple question that needs a Yes/No answer. No disappointment or disapproval if the answer comes back No. Pair it with a request to help her.

Lather. Rinse. Repeat.

When she realizes over time you’re not condemning her for saying No, she may eventually answer Yes. (Not saying you are condemning her, just that she may be taking it that way. We women can be funny that way sometimes.)

And as always, keep up the prayer.
