My husband and I would like to help a struggling family in our church financially, preferrably anonymously, but aren’t sure how to go about doing that. We live in a very small, “everyone knows everyone else” kind of town and the parish secretary is related to this family so I don’t think we can do this through the church without them finding out it’s us. I don’t want to just mail cash or gift cards because they might get lost or stolen. Any ideas? Carrier pigeon?

You can make an anonymous gift using a money order. Just mail it and don’t put a return address on the envelope.

Another option might be to circumvent the secretary. Make an appointment with the pastor, and during the appointment hand him the cash or money order and explain that it’s for the family in question but that you wish to remain anonymous. Any priest worth his salt would respect such a desire and would hand the money to the family in question.

Before we moved the last time, our priest stopped my husband and I after Adoration and gave us an anonymous gift card. I would suggest employing the priest to help out. I have no idea who the gift card came from, but we continue to pray for them. If you tell the priest you wish to be anonymous I am sure he will keep your identity secret.

Why didn’t I think of that? Going through the priest directly is a great idea. Thank you!
