I am going to spare to details, because the details are becoming very painful!

Many of our issues are due hostile rages from my wife.

Although we have talked about it before the blames all her problems on hormones and PMS. (3 or of 4-5 weeks a month).

I have ask her to consult her doctor but she refuses, mainly because she says I am certified to teach NFP and I now what is going on. She then blames the PMS and tells me I just need to deal with it. She does have a appointment with the doctor in a few weeks and has invited my to attend. (Please pray my guidance so that I effectively explain her symptoms without emotion)

I have been told by priest and consoling to give up, but I am not willing to give in. I made a commitment for life. Priest or consoling know all the answers and I believe god wishes for me to give it more time.

3 weeks of PMS is kind much for a cycle! PMS is usually a week long at the most. I’m thinking her problems aren’t related to her cycle. Could you elaborate on what is going on when she becomes in enraged? Do you have children? Does she work outside of the home? What are her responsibilities versus your responsibilities?

If what she is doing is violent or abusive, she and your family need help. Maybe marriage counselling would work, or talking to a priest. The fact that she blames her PMS for the fits of rage sounds like she is not willing to accept her behavior is wrong. And she needs to be shown that, in a gentle but firm way, that it is unacceptable.

Agree.

Have you told your wife you sought counseling? Tell her that you did (not that they told you to give up) because it’s important for the marriage, and ask her to come with you. If not, be patient and she may be curious enough to attend without pressure.

As for the doctor, it’s a good sign that she’s going and you can go along. I will pray that you can interact with the doctor in a non-emotional and constructive manner as you explain to him the symptoms she displays.

Without more details it’s hard to know if she’s overworked, stressed-out, has too much on on plate – working and children – or any number of causes.

Teach me, my Lord, to be sweet and gentle in all the events of my life, in disappointments, in the thoughtlessness of others, in the insincerity of those I trusted, in the unfaithfulness of those on whom I relied.

Let me forget myself so that I may enjoy the happiness of others. Let me always hide my little pains and heartaches so that I may be the only one to suffer from them.

Teach me to profit by the suffering that comes across my path.

Let me so use it that it may mellow me, not harden or embitter me; that it may make me patient, not irritable; that it may make me broad in my forgiveness, not narrow or proud or overbearing.

May no one be less good for having come within my influence; no one less pure, less true, less kind, less noble, for having been a fellow traveler with me on our journey towards eternal life.

As I meet with one cross after another, let me whisper a word of love to You. May my life be lived in the supernatural, full of power for good, and strong in its purpose of sanctity.

Amen.

This (bolded) is the only starting point to help your wife if her problems are tied to her menstrual cycle. If you wife’s doctor will allow it, please be there be at the appointment. If you think you’ll struggle explaining her symptoms, write them down before the appointment. Be specific, especially with dates since you think her issues are related to her cycle.

You also owe it to yourself and your marriage to protect yourself. No where does it say that you must be subjected to verbal abuse in your relationship with your wife. You need professional counselling. If your wife is unwilling to go, go by yourself.

Almost 4 years marriage and no children…

She started back to work only a few months ago she told almost a year off of work.

I think work helps situation.

I know\knew it is not possible for the PMS to be the entire problem, I was just looking for confirmation.

She has sometimes but not often physically abusiveness. (punch, push, spit)
She is often emotionally abusive. (full array of things, message me and I will share)

I am in consoling and getting mentally stronger.

I am scared that even if she gets better, I am no going forgive for all the pain I have endured.

I have finally confided in a few friends recently, all strong great catholic. I am amazed that would not shun be if I left. (This makes me sad that they perceive my wife in such a bad light)

I see. Physical abuse is never justified, nor is emotional abuse. However, even a woman has no right to place her hands, punch or spit on a man.

Stay in counseling; continue to speak with the priest. As someone said, when you see the physician make a list of questions and what you want to say.

You need to find out what is wrong so you can decide what to do. Only you know whether or not she displayed an indication of this type of behavior prior to the marriage and the kind of home she was raised in. Don’t answer, but think about if there was abuse in her family before you married her.

I would say this to a woman – so it applies no less to a man. If she places her hands on you in anger or spits – leave. Do not allow this, even if you have to temporarily separate with the condition that she gets treatment and counseling. If you have to leave – then do so. This may be her wake up call and leaving may be the best thing as she needs to see the seriousness of her behavior, and the destructiveness to the marriage.

You may know more after speaking with the doctor – but do not allow her to use physical abuse. She has to know that despite whatever she may be suffering from, it is NOT acceptable for her to hit and spit.

God Bless and I wish you success with the doctor’s visit.

I am sorry you are still going through this. I am hopeful that the fact that she is willing to see a doctor means that she is willing to address that there is a problem. The fact that she is blaming PMS may mean that she is not ready to take responsibility for the problem. As things get tougher and more comfrontational between you, health care providers, and her you need to have a safety plan for you should you need to leave in a hurry. It is important that should she escalate to violence (I know she already has but worse than she has) that you get out and call the police and file reports. Honestly there is nothing stopping her from filing first and they will believe her. You have to protect yourself. I am sorry to say this but you have done a lot to save this and if this is what you are called to do I support you but be smart in how you do it. Have a safety plan in place. My prayers are with you.

Thank you for you comments…

As we approach the doctor and the “abuse is then in the open”? I am concerned it could escalate.

I feel that I have started to build a pre-foundation for a support network for myself(emotional support a friend or two). I have the plan at least if I need to escalate. My parents can help with housing or what ever else I could need.

When she argues a lot I have got to a point where I am able to walk away or maybe I agreeing with her I can keep the abuse to a minimum. I do hear the following “this is one of the time I wish to hit you”

We have a priest friend (close enough friend we were invited to his private ordination dinner). I reach out to him just before christmas (he is young new priest). I spoke to him as a friend and not a priest. 5 minutes into our hour conversation he said “you know she is crazy? RIGHT?” Are things that happen to me really that obvious the outside?

This is one example, just one of the emotional abuse, 2 weeks ago I was laying in bed with my arm on her side. She then proceeded to hit the snooze button a few times. (Still had 2 hours to get ready for work and exercise). Because when the alarm went off, I did not encourage her to leave the bed. She proclaim the follow I hate you and do not love you. She sent be a fruit basket to work with a note saying “See I do love you”. Sucker me tells less than 48 hours later I love her.

Life stinks sometimes.

Wow! How long has she been emotionally and physically abusive to you? I hate to see a marriage end, but if you were a woman, and she was a man, I would be telling you to high tail it out of there, don’t even stay another night!

It seems pretty clear that your wife has psychological issues. You don’t need a marriage counselor as much as she needs to see a psychiatrist.

You can stick and around and see if you can help her though this sickness she has, but I think you do so at your own peril.

God doesn’t want to see anyone be abused!

This is such a sad and tough situation to be in, and my heart goes out to you. I will pray for you and your wife.

Michael, you better listen to the priests who are telling you that your marriage is not valid and get out. You are torturing yourself needlessly in a marriage that Catholic priests told you is not a sacramental marriage in their opinion. God forbid that you bring children into this hellish situation. What you promised at the altar doesn’t bind you - God does not expect us to bind ourselves to someone who is mentally and spiritually incapable of a valid sacramental marriage. You should stop this hardheadedness and listen to what your Catholic priests are telling you.

If this is organic, then her symptoms need to be treated. Women around the world get PMS, and we don’t hit, spit, or push anybody, or at least we aren’t given permission to do so. Most of us don’t get permission to be verbally abusive, either.

The truth is, most domestic abuse comes from men, and men don’t get PMS. They do suffer from stress and other mental health issues. They can also suffer from a tendency to make excuses for themselves and of expecting their victims to “deal with it.” This tendency is not confined to males. Whatever other legitimate problems your wife has, that tendency in her needs to stop. If this tendency is not confronted, your marriage will not survive her abusive behavior. No matter how committed you are, this cannot go on indefinitely.

So ask yourself: If the tables were turned and a woman came to you and asked how you ought to handle it when her husband treated her exactly in the same way your wife has treated you, what would you tell her? Would you tell her to tell no one else, lest he escalate his abuse? Would you give her hints about how *she *should act in order to not provoke *his *abusive outbursts? I don’t think so. Abuse does not go away when it is hidden. It does not go away when it is excused. Instead, whatever problem is causing it continues to grow, and the abuse gets worse. People die from failing to address abuse, even men. Although men are somewhat more likely to be physically abusive in general, women are by no means incapable of physical abuse, and some studies show that married women are more likely to be abusive than married men: divorcesupport.about.com/gi/o.htm?zi=1/XJ&zTi=1&sdn=divorcesupport&cdn=people&tm=40&gps=230_674_1259_572&f=00&tt=2&bt=0&bts=0&zu=http%3A//www.csulb.edu/%7Emfiebert/assault.htm Example: Brinkerhoff, M., & Lupri, E. (1988). Interspousal violence. Canadian Journal of Sociology, 13, 407-434. (Examined Interspousal violence in a representative sample of 562 couples in Calgary, Canada. Used Conflict Tactics Scale and found twice as much wife-to-husband as husband-to-wife severe violence <10.7% vs 4.8%>. The overall violence rate for husbands was 10.3% while the overall violence rate for wives was 13.2%. Violence was significantly higher in younger and childless couples. Results suggest that male violence decreased with higher educational attainment, while female violence increased.]

If you have any hope of saving your marriage, the abuse must stop. It is intolerable, I do not care what her hormones are doing, and your wife should not be allowed to give herself permission to abuse you. A person who is a danger to herself or others does not get carte blanche to cause harm because she has an organic issue that is causing it. If she really has no self control because of the problem, as she seems to be claiming, then she needs to have herself committed until the problem is brought under control. If she is not that bad, then she needs to control herself.

I will remind you, by the way, that although the rules on paper are the same for men and women, the rules as they are practiced are not. If she gets bruised some night when you are defending yourself, you could easily be the one who winds up arrested, jailed, and convicted. You will be the one with the criminal record, and it will never go away. The next time she starts getting abusive, at least one of you needs to leave immediately. No threats, no arguments, no drama, no nothing. Have a place where you can go, and just leave.

You know that if she were alcoholic or abusing drugs, you would only make the situation worse by covering for her and letting her make excuses for herself. Because she is giving herself permission to abuse her and you are tolerating and even concealing the abuse, this situation is not different. You must say “no, this must stop”.

Thank you everyone for you responses, it is such a painful, confusing and stressful situation.

I wish I could share more but it is hard for me write. (at least with grammar being correct)

I realize if the tables where turned and I was the wife it probably would have ended before…

I did make the commitment to be married to her, through good time and bad.

I dislike like myself because if I get a annulment I would no issues (church speaking to get married again)

Through all this mess I do believe I love her as much as the I married her.

I feel guilty about because my wife has no idea how close our marriage could be to ending.
If the doctor would say, this marriage should probably end. I realize the doctor will not. but say they would. I need no thought process, no consular (name removed by moderator)ut, and no priest to help with the decision process.

Many of us have kind of told him that her behavior is not right and that no one should feel that they should be forced to stay in an abusive relationship - however the OP has made this decision and therefore I, who can only speak for myself, will do my best to support him in it as long as he is safe. Please don’t think he has not been told those things because of the gender difference.

The doctor will not say end the marriage, but he may say that you need to separate for your own protection and safety. It’s true. If you defend yourself when she becomes abusive, you may be assumed to be have struck her.

Please examine when this began, were there signs before you married that she was quick to anger and did she strike you, and her background as to whether or not her family is similar in their behaviors? And if not, have others noticed the change, if it is a change? Only you know.

I would separate for now. Speak to a priest again as it will be important for a priest to have the whole picture of when this began. You can help her, but I think you should live apart.

Michael, what do you expect from your wife once you will have children together? Will she push and hit the children, will she spit on them? Will she yell on them constantly?

What you are doing is a recipe for disaster, and it will get infinitely worse once you are going to bring helpless and vulnerable children into this world who won’t be able to defend themselves from the abuse.

You are on your own, the Catholic Church is not supporting your adventure, and you have been told so in no uncertain terms. How many Catholic priests and faithful Catholic counselors advised you already to divorce and get an annulment?

There are also organic issues that can give a person mood swings. She could have an issue that does make it very hard to control her temper and herself. That isn’t an excuse, but taking care of any bodily issues that make things more difficult for her could make all the difference in the world. Also, learning to calm yourself, deal with stress, and so on is partly a matter of body-awareness. You can listen to your body and know when you’re likely to lose it. Her doctor and others that he might refer this lady to might help this marriage tremendously.

This brings me to an important clarification: Insisting that she take responsibility for herself is not the same as blaming her or shaming her. It isn’t about making her out to be the bad guy. It is one part of the overall marital task of drawing boundaries and holding to them, though, and she does have to do her part. She’ll need support, she’ll need love, she’ll need forgiveness, but in the end she still has to do her part. No one can do it for her. If there are professionals who can help her do that consistently, it is one of the best investments that could be made for this marriage.

Michael, hope you keep yourself safe and can discern what is best in this situation. I wanted you to know I appreciate how hard it is to come forward in a situation like this. It is not a sign of weakness to try and keep things together, but a testimony of your commitment. I’m in a dire situation myself and being a former soldier and cancer survivor have never felt so overcome with helplessness before or ever. It is not in my nature to quit on those I love, even if it is not returned or worse, outright rejected and spurned by hatred. Just wanted you to know you are not a lesser man dealing with these things. It can happen to those that would give our all. Samson

Some people might view a person as weak because they are in a relationship with an abuser, but in most cases, the victim becomes stronger than those who frown down on them. You are commiting yourself to your marriage, which is what I believe God would want a Christian to do. Whatever happens, you will become stronger. And your marriage might possibly as well. Good for you.
