How to hide a scapular

I would like to be able to wear the brown scapular. But I work in an office, and I wear a dress shirt and office pants (no tie at my company). If I were to wear a scapular, it would be seen through my shirt (if only by the square bumps in front and back), and if anyone were to find out that I’m Catholic, I could easily lose my job–that’s the culture of the area where I live, I intend to move when I can.

Does anyone know how I could hide the evidence that I’m wearing a scapular? Or is this something that just needs to wait until I can move to a place where I won’t lose my job for wearing it? (Don’t tell me I need to lose my fear of being fired. If I am fired, my mother and I will become homeless. I would only risk that to avoid a mortal sin.)

wear a light colored scapular or scapular medal under a thick hanes tee shirt and then put a looser dress shirt over that.

Dress shirts are not meant to be skin-tight and with a proper undershirt it would be easy to disguise just about anything under your clothing.

One should be wearing a tee shirt under a dress shirt anyway, to keep them nice.

Be invested with a scapular medal. Praying for you! Pax Christi!

I have one that is also a four way medal. It is oval and not overly large. I have it on a chain long enough to fit over my head and it hides most of the time under most of my shirts. (I’m a girl 🙂 ) I’ve worn the brown cloth scapular and it sometimes does pop out of the back of my collar or the front neckline. I don’t mind, but sometimes it just doesn’t look right with the outfit and is distracting.

wear an undershirt and wear the scapular beneath the undershirt

it will deteriorate faster but you can always get another one

sorry you are in such a situation 😦

You shouldn’t just change out the wool for a medal scapular. This link has a lot of good information. There is a specific question about wool versus medal.

Sisters of Carmel - Brown Scapular FAQ

There does seem to be discrepancies on this question from different websites. It seems better, to me, to follow what the Carmelites say about it.

As mentioned on many past threads, the Sisters of Carmel are a schismatic group and their information on the scapular is not current or correct. For example, it is no longer required that the scapular be wool.

i had never heard that the sisters of carmel are “schismatic”

can you provide a link?

Re the current info on scapular: I am reposting here a link to the Scapular Catechesis that was posted recently on the old board by our members Don Ruggero (priest) and Dorothy (lay Carmelite) that should have the correct information. As stated within, the medal is not the preferred form but may be used “for good reason”. Concern about losing your job is probably a good reason, although I would be inclined to seek a new job where I didn’t have to worry about discriminatory firing.

Re the Sisters of Carmel: there have been many threads on them because every single time someone says brown scapular on here, somebody posts their website and link.

Here is a recent scapular thread where they were discussed:

Is it OK to switch to another Brown Scapulat? Traditional Catholicism
This is incorrect. It doesn’t have to be wool. Does the Brown scapular have to be wool? It did at one time, it no longer does. Few Carmelite Religious use pure wool for their habits, including their scapulars, anymore because of the expense and the impracticality. Brown Scapular Catechesis This is the definitive teaching about the Brown Scapular from the Carmelites. As to the Sisters of Carmel, they are not Carmelites. They are a renegade organization living outside of the Vatican, Bis…
Here is one from a few years back where people debate whether the Sisters of Carmel are schismatic or just “renegade”:

Scapular from schismatic group Spirituality
Sisters of Carmel aren’t schismatic. They are considered renegade, an independent order. Masses for the sisters are celebrated by priests from Servants of the Holy Family, who are schismatic. If you peruse the sisters’ website, you will find no mention of local bishop approval, Rome approval, or Carmelite order approval. A letter written by the bishop in 2004 used to be on the Archdiocese of Colorado Springs website. When the website was redesigned a couple of years ago, the letter didn’t make…
I also had this discussion with another board member earlier this year who wrote to the order directly to check and got a message back where they stated something like unfortunately, they were not currently in full communion with the church of Rome. I would quote directly from the PM but it did not make it over to the new forum in the move.

Yes. Follow the Carmelites in the link tis bear has provided, as was provided to us originally by Don Ruggero, a Priest and Scholar conversant in Marian Theology.

devotion to the brown scapular is important

the rubrics of it are not

whos’ business is it to know what you are wearing under your shirt ? if wearing a scapular is comfortable to you under your shirt then problem solved, and if anyone asks what you are wearing under your shirt if you feel comfortable telling the person with out fear that the person will cause ya drama , then tell em, if it is someone who will cause drama, tell em to go ask human resources and if it is a nosey manager, tell em to go ask your lawyer.
