I feel like I’m doing the bear minimum. I confess my major sins and why they’re a problem for me, and then I do my penance as soon as possible.

Any tips to make it more meaningful?

Just keep on your spiritual journey. I find that the more I learn about the ways of God, the more I become aware of my own sinfulness. This is because we see God as more holy and perfect. The more I become aware of my sinfulness, the more penitent I become, and more meaning confession has.

Give as much attention, or more, to your sorrow for sin and purpose of amendment as you do to examining your conscience and confessing the sins. I must remind myself of this frequently.

some suggestions i have:
+pray to the holy spirit before and after
+go to adoration a few minutes before confession
+think about how many times you committed the sins and what were the situations before…

thats all i can think of the moment… when we go to confession our hearts are in the right place… keep up the awesome work!!!

I agree with doing some time of adoration before going. If your church doesn’t have an adoration chapel, just sit before the tabernacle.

I also find the Prayer Before a Crucifix very helpful beforehand (and afterwards!). You do want to ensure that you have a firm purpose of admendment and so you need to seek out ways to flee the temptations of your sins. A regular prayer habit helps. I am also calling upon shorter prayers and ejaculations to use in times of temptation!

Good suggestions have already been posted. I also go through a “confession guide” for other sins that don’t immediately come to mind.

A while ago I had difficulty finding material to bring to my usual 3 weekly confession.
I spent an hour before the Blessed Sacrament, contemplating how Jesus and Mary may have lived My last 3 weeks ,and it helped bring up plenty, along with true sorrow . There I made my best confession to date.
When I went in to the priest, after a few words I surprised myself by bursting into tears.

I pray before examining my conscience. I have several examinations of conscience and I switch them around from time to time. Keep reading about church teachings. I’m always nuancing my understanding of myself and sin.
