How does one join RCIA? How much does it cost? When does one need to sign up?

I would suggest calling the parish nearest you and inquiring. Many RCIA catechetical programs run on a Sept-May sort of schedule, so they are probably wrapping up right now. Some parishes are able to run year round programs, so you would be able to start attending sessions. So really, it’s a local situation and we can’t answer you as to when you would start, etc.

At a minimum the parish office should be able to give you the name of the RCIA contact so that you can reach out and at least talk preliminarily.

I’ve never been involved in any RCIA program that charged participants anything. Typically there are either handouts or a book, maybe a bible and catechism given to the inquirers. In my experience, the parish picks up that cost, but it is possible in some areas they may ask inquirers for money to cover class supplies.

What 1ke said is exactly right. Your local parish will be able to provide you the information you need about when classes start, how to sign up, and so on.

At ours, we give away some surplus Bibles we have at the parish (though they are pretty ratty and some decide to go buy their own anyway)…but the other books we use we make available for purchase at-cost, or students can obtain them on their own. The total cost ends up being about $25, give or take. We also have some generous parishioners who will cover the costs for anybody who says they cannot afford them, no-questions-asked.

My hope is that we will be changing this in the fall and offer all of our class materials for free. I think that will remove a lot of hassle (both for students, and for me, the RCIA coordinator and money-changer ;)). Even if we have some drop-outs who take the books with them, which I think was the concern when the purchase policy was put in place (before my time), the Holy Spirit still may move them to read 'em later and possibly come back!

There is definitely no cost to the RCIA classes (or the Sacraments!) themselves.

God bless you, and best wishes in your faith journey and your RCIA experience.

Call or email your parish, or stick around after Mass and ask the priest. Some parishes have their own RCIA program; others are affiliated with a regional or diocesan one. Whatever it is, they’ll be glad to help.

RCIA classes are free. There may be some required reading - usually a Bible and a Catechism. Some programs hand them out, but usually you’re required to purchase them yourself.

Most programs start in September and end with the rites of initiation at the Easter Vigil.

Just make yourself know to the priest.
Don’t let not having their preferred edition of the Bible or a Catechism hold you back. They’ll either give you one, or I will.
Peace!

What I did for the precatechumenate I’m now in (hopefully soon, God willing, I will be in RCIA officially), I looked for a parish nearby and introduced myself to the priest, who made all the arrangements.

It’s free of charge, as far as I know. 😃 And I doubt there’s a bad time to sign up – but over here, RCIA instructional classes start a specific time, such that catechumens complete it and then receive the Sacraments of initiation, Easter Vigil.

I guess I’ll call the parish offices. The bulletin says something about this. Thanks for the replies! 😃

Welcome Home! Let us know how things are going and if we can answer any questions not covered in class. 👍

As others have said; just speak with a Priest or Deacon or call the Parish Rectory.

My wife just finished RCIA about 2 months ago…they had a video series called SYMBOLON…explains the Catholic faith in detail…I believe it’s on EWTN now…brilliant series…every parish should have it for their RCIA …my wife was totally blown away about how much it taught about Catholicism.

When should I call? Just before August/September, or ASAP?
At your earliest convenience. You wouldn’t want to find out right before it starts that you’d have a conflicting time commitment.

Good Searching and ICXC NIKA!

I’d personally call now and see what they say, especially when classes start, and to make an appointment with the parish priest and maybe the RCIA instructor. 🙂

Neat, I didn’t know about that video series. I think Fr. Barron’s Catholicism may also work for catechesis.

Call now – some parishes will be have you do “Inquiry” BEFORE RCIA starts in the Fall. We met with the RCIA director once a week from late July into September before the classes started in late September.

You may be lucky enough to be near a parish that does year-round RCIA.

Welcome home!

I will only reiterate, inquire about the classes ASAP. I was told ‘in the fall’ and missed the beginning, inquiry phase. That class was using a middle school curriculum for its rcia and charged me $20. I inquired about an ‘adult’ class at another parish and was charged $32. Ask questions regarding schedule, materials used and who will be teaching and if availability of a priest to meet with the class attendees is scheduled.
