A few years ago, I made some bad decisions…
I dated a married man. we met in the bar i used to work at. I was a waitress. I dont know why…but we hung out for about…7 months. He bought me everything and we hung out quite a bit.
I ended it. After he wanted to leave his wife and kids…I had to end it. I met someone else and started a new life and found jesus…(its been about 3 years now)
But to this day i feel bad…for everything i did. For his wife, his kids, I know it was not just me. He still contiues to go to these places from what I am told, but I am not involved in that scene whatso ever.
I feel bad for the money he spent on me…and i somehow want to pay it back…but not to him, his wife.
I would never say anything to her i do not even know her, and I do not speak to him either ( he is very VERY mad at me)…
It seems i cannot shake the bad feeling i have for what i have done.
I never felt bad before, but after I started connecting with my faith and finding jesus and the church, its like a constant pulling on my heart…i need to get it off my chest…I want to go to confession but i am worried…
I feel awful everyday…i really do, and i cant really take it anymore. Please dont bash me for what i have done…i know it was wrong …VERY wrong…
Any advice???

Please go to confession and free yourself of this awful burden of guilt. You are repentant, and you never intend to sin like this again. Please don’t be afraid of confessing. Your priest has heard so many confessions…and he will be glad that you have repented and come to God. You will receive absolution and your soul will be pure before God.

The husband stole this money from her. But ask the priest what he thinks. What a sensitve heart you have to think of this! Pray for her and her husband. They need prayer more than anything. It would be a good thought to offer all the past pain you’ve felt for your sin, together with all the pain Jesus suffered for others sins, in reparation and in prayer for them.

Please take good care of yourself.

Jesus, please give my sister peace

In failure

Jesus, I put my trust in the apparent failure of the Cross, for You are condemned to a criminal’s execution and it seems that Your mission has failed, You who alone could redeem humanity.

Who can accept that it is God-incarnate whose sweat and blood drips into the dust, from Your drained, dishonoured body! Yet Your human cry of abandonment by the Father is belied by the triumph of love and faith in Your final confident submission. You die, but You have not betrayed the Father’s trust.

Jesus, to my sadness, I fail in many ways and sin against others by my failures. Have I betrayed Your will or mistaken Your purpose? Will You restore me to grace now, Jesus? To do what? Will You show me? Will You fuse together the broken pieces—of my life, of my service—to make a new and better creation? Am I to step around the fragments and to pass another way?

I ask to walk with certainty along the path of holiness that You choose uniquely for me. If not, then please allow me the certainty of buoyant faith. I ask courage to continue through the enveloping fog, trusting each small moment to the illumination of faith and grace.

Jesus out of my failure and sorrow You will bring healing and goodness luminescent as priceless pearls grown around grains of suffering, for Your glory, and for others’ remedy and blessing

Thank you, what a beautiful prayer.
I had tears as I read it.

One idea to consider when you look at other humans is to realize that they are simply one of God’s creatures. Do not elevate them too much nor lower yourself down too much. Humility of course, but not lowering yourself mentaly.

Also consider the case of Mary Magdelene, was she not a sinner to a large degree? Yet our Lord Jesus Christ saw past all that.

catholic.org/saints/saint.php?saint_id=83

I like your idea of giving something back to the family. I am sure there is some way to do so anonymously.

To the idea that you cannot shake the “bad feeling” I would suggest you involve some effort in a positive cause. I know the feeling. It is the feeling of a sinner and I being a sinner myself have many sins to repent.

I visit at a nursing home, collecting money to build a house for someone in Tanzania, and will be adding supporting a local horse riding camp for disabled kids. Also, I have now delved into supporting pro-life causes in an active way. My point being be pro active in living out the gospel of Jesus.

Your hesitation to go to confession? Consider what I taught my class of high schoolers at St. Patrick’s. I told them that at first people often do what is right because they fear God. As they grow they do good because it is good. Last of all are the people who realize that they should do good because they love God and the only reason they can love God is that He loved us first. Confession is an opportunity to express your love to God.

So if this is any help you can thank the Holy Spirit.

God bless

A suggestion is to think about what you would say to someone who told you they had done what you had done. I think you would not minimise what they did but you would probably try and help them lift the burden of guilt they feel. If this is so, then you should do the same with yourself.

Don’t find this surprising you are now in a different space and probably evaluating your life - how it was and how you would like it to be.

Maybe trying to see confession, not as part of your old life, but the start of how you would like your life to be would help you to go to confession.

No way I would bash you for what you have done. First because you are clearly suffering for what you did (and I would like to see you move on not stay stuck) and because we all have things in our life that we are not proud of.

Maybe think about what you could do with the time that you are spending now regretting the past on things on things like Highwaybound suggested.

Also think about your good qualities and the good things you do. You are the sum of ALL you do, the wise, unwise and the wrong, not only the wrong. This is something I have to remember.

Dear OP,

I know it doesn’t feel like this right now, but your deep sorrow and regret is a fabulous opportunity for union with God. It is when we are most dejected and feel least worthy that he wants us to throw ourselves on him. Many people have had the same feelings that you’ve had, just over different circumstances and different sins in many cases.

Most adults with enough of a “past,” have some serious regrets about one or more actions, which similarly could have had a snowball effect on others and on themselves. That moment when we first realize the depth and breadth of those consequences – the moment you’re experiencing – is very painful, and often lasts far more than a moment. When we have only our shame to give to Christ, that’s what we should give. The point is not to make your regret an occasion for despair. He will transform your shame and make it redemptive.

You are on the right track because you can share your feelings. Lots of people separate their deepest feelings from their prayer, but feelings, when directed toward God, are avenues toward grace, and not fully sharing feelings with God short-circuits some of that grace. So bring tears to him as well. (Remember those gospel women who brought their tears to him? He was moved and was impelled to treat them with dignity and remove their shame.)

As far as “bashing you for what you’ve done,” wow – that would be way out of line. I doubt most people are in a position to do that, least of all myself. 🙂 When experiencing what you’re feeling, it feels as if no one could be as bad a sinner. You’re not “the worst,” but that feeling is a grace.

Say those things in confession that you’ve said here, and bring it all to Jesus. Here’s one wonderful way to start your own personal penance even before then (or after then). I’ll give you an example from my life: Several years ago a friend/ex-friend (now) did something really bad to me. It included slander and rash judgment and calumny, and caused me unjustly to lose my job and my reputation in a parish. Her actions had far-reaching effects. I haven’t seen her or spoken to her since then, but since I have reason to believe that she now realizes how inaccurate and dishonest her judgments were, I’ve also had an intuitive feeling that she prayed for me as a penance, and that those prayers brought me to the (much better, far more fulfilling) job I have now.

So begin immediately praying, in heartfelt sorrow, for the family that you’ve wronged, God will absolutely hear the prayers of a humble and repentant heart.

As to monetarily “paying her back,” I would leave that in God’s hands, and pray for that as well. You can’t do anything to identify yourself or cause her grief, and you don’t have a direct line to her or his checking account. God will find ways to engineer other sources for financial repayment of them, if that’s “in the cards.” (In my example, the loss of income I suffered in losing the job was made up for in the much-better-paying replacement job that I believe resulted from the prayers of the person who wronged me.)
God bless you,
E.

Thank you all for your replies…
I really like this site! I feel better just by being here!
Nice to see so many people open to helping others!:o
Thanks again!

How do you feel about having a Bipolar I who dearly loves her Jesus, whose seriously flawed judgments have left me with such terrible feelings of guilt and doubt (not in Him, but doubt in myself). Am I acceptable on this site and will you pray for me?

Mary

Hi Karma,

Just wanted to say I agree with all of the above Posters. Confession to tell God you are sorry for sins and to receive absolution and also please forgive yourself and move on. You are a new creature once you become right with God. He certainly doesn’t want us dwelling on our past mistakes.

I thank you for your courage and for sharing your story. Gives us all a chance to be reminded of God’s unlimited Mercy.

God Bless and Take Care…

Will pray for you Mary. You are truly acceptable to this site and most importantly, to God.

Of course you are acceptable and we will support you including by praying for you. Hope you will do the same for us.

Thank you for your love. I come to this site not only for myself, but for all of us who struggle with mood or mental disorders.

There is a great problem here, in that (I speak only for myself now) there is such a dearth of Catholic counseling in my area, although I am blessed with an excellent Jewish psychiatrist and a Jewish therapist.

I find that priests are not well educated regarding the sort of disorder which God has permitted me to deal with. We need that kind of help in the confessional, where, I am afraid, we are often not really understood…in fact, sometimes I get the feeling the priest can’t wait to get away lest I be contagious.

Yes, I am needy. But I think God has given me a voice which He wants me to use for those of us who cannot express their need.

How do you feel about this? Am I in the right place? I ask because I am so new to this site…which I love!!!

Mary

PS I believe that Jesus’ mercy is limitless, which is why it is called the greatest aspect of the Godhead.

Please feel free to ask any questions that you may like. 🙂
I and others cannot promise to know the answers but I am sure people will not ever purposefully try to mislead. :o

Thank you for your sweet reply.

As I write this I am looking into the eyes of the Sacred Heart, whose picture is on my desk. This devotion was introduced to me by a sainted great-aunt who taught French in a Catholic college long ago.
He is my mainstay in periods of mental instability.

For anyone who struggles with mental illness, I strongly reccommend the Sacrament of the Sick during periods of stress. Its value in healing cannot be overlooked.

As a single Mom, I dedicated my household to Our Lady of Guadalupe, my birthday patroness, and Her picture has hung in my home over 40 years. When in deep trouble emotionally I remember her words To St. Juan Diego: “Am I not here, I who am your Mother? Are you not under my shadow and protection?
Am I not the source of your joy?
Are you not in the folds of my mantle, in the crossing of my arms?”

Who could possibly be fearful and in doubt, shaking with anxiety after such a statement of love and protection…a bipolar can.

I am not alone. There are millions of us, many without the consolation of the Faith. Pray for all of them. You have no concept of their suffering…

Thank you for your kind response. 🙂

Those are beautiful words by Our Lady of Guadalupe. Thank you for sharing them. I am so grateful to hear them at this point in time. 🙂 😛 :o ❤️ ❤️ :o 🙂

One of Bishop Fulton Sheen’s favorite poems:

Lovely Lady dressed in blue
Teach me how to pray!
God was just your little boy,
Tell me what to say!

Did you lift Him up, sometimes,
Gently on your knee?
Did you sing to Him the way
Mother does to me?

Did you hold His hand at night?
Did you ever try
Telling stories of the world?
O! And did He cry?

Do you really think He cares
If I tell Him things ----
Little things that happen? And
Do the Angels’ wings

Make a noise? And can He hear
Me if I speak low?
Does He understand me now?
Tell me ----for you know.

Lovely Lady dressed in blue —
Teach me how to pray!
God was just your little boy,
And you know the way.

Dear Karma,
There is a story in the bible about the woman who was caught in adultry. Have you read or heard the story? She was going to be stoned to death. Let me know if you haven’t hear the story. It has a happy ending.Jesus forgave her.
Forgiving ourselves can be difficult but is worth the effort. You are just beginning to see the light. I would encourage you to continue your journey of faith by seeking out a good priest or spiritual director.

I am thinking it is mary of magdelin or?.. I havent really head very many stories from the bible 😊 …Which is something I will be changing.
I would be happy to hear or read it. Please let me know which one it is!🙂

ve Maria!

I love that poem to Our Lady. I learned it in grammar school in the 1940’s, loved it then as now but haven’t heard it in its entirety for a very long time.

I have a grand-daughter who is just turning 2 this month. I will send the poem-----all of it----to her mother as a belated gift.

I ask prayers of everyone as I am fighting through a serious depression. Medication makes me sick, but it is the only way to recover. And, recover I will, with the aid of the rosary and all the Catholic websites which give me courage.

Most of the time I am in remission, but there are times as now which are a true cross for Lent! Praise God for his Mercy!
