How to leave Adoration?

My wife and I go to Adoration at least once a week at a parish that is not ours.

This evening we had to go, we continued to wait, but no one else came. We had been told by another lay person that if we need to leave to Cover the montrance and turn off the light that is directed at the monstrance.

We sang “Oh Sacrament Most Holy,” I covered the monstance and turned off the light.

Is this correct?

(Fortunately we met the priest in the vestibule and let him know).

Yes, that was what I would have done. But I think I would have called the person in charge of those hours, or let someone know before I left.

You need to find out who’s in charge and maybe talk to the pastor about this also. Really, the Sacrament should never be left all alone (if you have to get up out of the room to go open the door for the next adorer or something, fair enough, but generally speaking the host should not be abandoned). Someone should always be there or else the Sacrament should be reserved in the tabernacle. Most parishes with perpetual adoration have a list posted somewhere of who’s in charge of coordinating things during various hours to ensure that if you have a problem and must leave, but no one else comes, someone can get there and either be remain presentg or reserve the Host.

If there were two of you one of you should stay while the other go to find the priest, or whoever is in charge.
In our parish if someone does fail to turn up, then someone waits up to two hours before they can leave. It is important not to leave the blessed sacrament alone as it could be vandalised or desecrated.

which is the whole purpose of the Adoration… We must never leave the Lord alone…

You or your wife should have stayed in the chapel while the other went to find the priest or whoever was supposed to come after you. Never, ever leave the Sacrament alone. If you MUST leave, and there is no one around and you cannot reach somebody to take over for you, consume the Host first (or put it back in the tabernacle if you have a key- ask the priest what to do in situations like this). Parishes with perpetual adoration surely have a list of numbers you can call any time- day or night- for people who will come and take over for you.

No, that’s not adequate. The Blessed Sacrament MUST be secured in a locked tabernacle, unless someone is personally resposible for His protection. You or your wife should have gone to the rectory and let the priest know that you both needed to leave. He would have been responsible to come over and stay or repose the Blessed Sacrament.

This has happened to me before where noone showed up. I suggest that unless it is absolutely necessary to wait until the next person arrives.
