Hi Everyone,
This morning, i decided to take the first step and REALLY change my life and turn it over to Jesus and God.
Basically instead of living my life for me, im now living it to serve God.
There is a few things i need to know however…
I know the basic things like read the bible, go to church every sunday, pray the rosary every day. But what sort of sacrifices can I do/make for God? Im stumped when i try to think of things I can do.
At the moment, im a volunteer to teach children at the local primary school about God.
Also, what are things that I can do in the name of God to serve him better?
Thanks so much for your (name removed by moderator)ut and advice in advance.

There are many small sacrifices you can make each day.
Give up some legitimate pleasure when the desire to indulge it comes. (eg. You’re really thirsty for a Coke; have a glass of water instead) Nobody but you even knows you’re doing it.

Mortification of the eyes: when you desire to look at something (not necessary, of course), say “no” to your curiosity and offer it up. (eg. walking or driving and looking a landscaping in the various yards; instead look straight ahead)

If you’re in the habit of hitting the “snooze” button on your alarm, get up right away instead.

I remember when I asked the same questions you’re asking and luckily I had a friend who could give me some answers. (No computer forums back in those days. 🙂 )

Consider these:

The Works of Mercy

THE CORPORAL ACTS

To feed the hungry: “For I was hungry and you gave me to eat.” Mt. 25:35

To give drink to the thirsty: “…I was thirsty and you gave me to drink…” Mt. 25:35

To clothe the naked: “I was…naked and you clothed me…” Mt. 25:36

To visit the imprisoned: “I was in prison and you came to me.” Mt. 25:36

To shelter the homeless: “…I was a stranger and you took me in…” Mt. 25:35

To visit the sick: “…I was sick and you cared for me…” Mt. 25:36

To bury the dead: “Amen, I say to you, insofar as you did it for one of these least of my brothers, you did it for me.” Mt. 25:40

THE SPIRITUAL ACTS

To admonish the sinner: “…there will be more joy in Heaven at the repentance of one sinner than at ninety-nine of the righteous who had no need of repentance.” Lk. 15:7

To instruct the ignorant: “Go into the whole world and proclaim the good news to all creation.” Mk. 16:15

To counsel the doubtful: “Peace I leave with you, my peace I give to you…Let not your hearts be troubled…” Jn. 14:27

To comfort the sorrowful: “Come to me, all you grown weary and burdened, and I will refresh you.” Mt. 11:28

To bear wrongs patiently: “…Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you.” Lk. 6:27-28

To forgive all injuries: “And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.” Mt. 6:12

To pray for the living and the dead: “Father, I desire that they, too, may be with me where I am…” Jn. 17:24

begin first with performing the duties of each day faithfully, competently, cheerfully and promptly. For instance, don’t rush out to help someone else if you are leaving your wife or mother to clean up after your mess at home. Don’t neglect your own family in order to serve others because the others give you more credit and appreciation. The best guides I can think of for what you want to do are the Rule of St. Benedict and the Little Way of St. Therese. In fact, there is a book that came out in the last 2 years that compares these two methods and shows how perfectly they relate to each other, and how well they can be applied to daily life of lay people in the world.
