Hi CA,

I have a brown scapular, but sometimes, when I’m wearing it, it rides up in back and shows above the collar of my shirt. How do I avoid this? Does any brown scapular exist that doesn’t do this?

Thanks,
Ben

Mine and my wife’s does the same. Just checked mine and it was high in the back. I don’t have an answer. I read that some people put metals on the Scapular to balance it. I’m not sure if that’s allowed.

My mother used to pin it to her clothes.
I don’t think wearing it another way makes it ineffective.

I find that when it rides up, it prompts a conversation with someone who sees it peeking out. Also serves as a good prompt for me to say a quick prayer, or rethink what I’m about to say or do. After all, Christianity isn’t about comfort, right? Pick up your cross, no?

i pull my brown scapular tight against my undershirt one side fully down (chest) and one side fully up; btwn my shoulder blades (back)

on top goes my outer shirt

i do not sleep with my brown scapular on because too many times it has been torn apart by nocturnal turning from side to side

in the morning i shower dress and happily place my brown scapular and other catholic medals on

i have kept the same brown scapular intact for a LONG time this way

Mine is almost always poking out in some way, even if only the string. I just can’t seem to keep it tucked away and must admit, I am always running about too busy to even try and keep on top of it half the time. But its weird, no one ever asks me about it. It often strikes me as odd actually. I guess no one wants to know. Yet when I wear a pendant people will say “Oh that’s pretty”.

pull it down in front and up in the back

unless you want to show it off which OK by me 🙂

Try one with larger cloth pieces and longer cords. I find that these larger scapulars tend less to ride up and behave like necklaces. I’m wearing one whose cloth pieces are about 1 1/2 x 2 inches and the cord is 18 or so inches long. End-to-end, including the cloth pieces, it measures about 22 inches and is quite stable.

I prefer that the scapular ride up my neck because it’s a scapular; it’s supposed to hang over the shoulders (scapula) and down the front and back; and I prefer to keep the link with the large Carmelite scapular.

Thanks! The “pin it to your shirt” idea seems to work for me.

Doesn’t seem to me that keeping it tucked under an undershirt or between an undershirt and outer shirt will help. I might have tried that before.

I’ll check out the larger scapulars; thanks for pointing out the connection between “shoulder” and “scapula”! I thought the original scapulars were really big, like what some monks wear nowadays, does anyone know if that’s right?

I know people hate this…but there are scapular medals.
I have one.

That is correct. The brown scapular, strictly speaking, is the long brown cloth that hangs over the shoulders of the Carmelite, and is an integral part of the Carmelite habit. Look, for example at this picture: vocationblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/Carmelites1.jpg

If you observe the brothers in the front row, they’re tucking their hands behind a long piece of brown cloth. THAT is the scapular.

Our little brown scapulars are “abbreviated” versions of that, but the Carmelites want to emphasize the link between the small brown scapulars and the full-size scapulars worn by the Carmelites. That’s why it’s important to note that while small brown scapulars today typically have images sewn onto them, they are not actually necessary. All that needs to be a valid small brown scapular are two pieces of plain brown cloth (traditionally wool) connected by cords or ribbons that allow the two pieces to hang over the shoulder, front and back. The Carmelites have even expressed a preference that the cloth pieces remain plain.
