Why is it that someone who’s experiencing despair and hopelessness means its the devil working on you?
Every faith based site I read today has proclaimed this is what’s happening.

Hello Lilimo67, do you see a medical professional over your feelings of despair?

Lilimo67,
I suffer from depression and am on medication for it. Our brains can do strange things to us if there is some kind of chemical imbalance. I initially went to my priest, but he had me call my doctor right away. Have you tried seeing your doctor?

I spoke with my priest and he told me to see a doctor as did others. For me, I have anxiety and I take medicine for it. Without the medicine, I become depressed and feel hopeless and get very anti-social because of my anxiety. With medication it’s amazing, I can act as myself.

I would speak with your priest 😀

Thank you for replying. These are sporadic feelings and still new to me. Thinking back it started after I turned 50, 2 yrs ago.
My struggle with this despair is looking at the future and seeing my only child alone in the world once her dad and I are gone…I have thought about talking to a doctor about this only today…

They’re simply ignorant. Would anyone dare to say that a problem with the lungs is the result of Satanic influences? What about if someone has a problem with their stomach? Why then, does it follow that someone with a brain problem is being influenced by Satan? Why does it have to be that someone with a certain organ problem is just fine, while a problem with another organ is touched by Satan?

This is one of the reasons I left Islam; I had depression and pretty much all of them would say that I’m not praying hard enough or that I’m weak. I hope christians will wake up and see that it’s perfectly possible for one to suffer from a mental problem without there being a satanic influence.

Don’t let the ignorance of others affect you.

I get it. My depression had me at my darkest when I was turning 60. I’m 62 now. The medication my doctor gave me along with some adjustments, and the counseling she prescribed, really helped. My wife was also very supportive after I opened up to her. Please make an appointment today.
As a parent, I worry daily about my two boys. But in the end they have to live their own lives. One is doing well (29) and the second is still struggling to find his path (36). The youngest has one child and the oldest just had twins and stays home caring for them while his wife works. One thing I’ve decided to do is to write a letter to each of them to read after I’m gone. I’ve been thinking a lot about what needs to be in it, and it will be long. Everything from how I love them and their families, financial advice, to my love for God and how important my faith is to me. I will place it with our will and trust documents so it will be found. I’ll pray it provides them some guidance, but in the end it is their life to live.
Please make that doctor appointment. God Bless.

Did you know the onset of anxiety/depression can come through menopause? Since you state you are about that age, this may well be a symptom. I would definitely see your doctor. By no means are many types of depression/anxiety demonic attacks, but rather treatable illnesses. I do often see misleading threads here on CAF about this matter. Ignore them; start with your doctor.

Thank you for sharing your story! I haven’t opened up to anyone . I plan on opening up to my husband soon.
Love your idea of writing your sons a letter. It’s so thoughtful .

I never thought I needed to until yesterday …
This occurs maybe once every couple of months and last a couple of days .
These past couple of days have been the hardest…
My subconscious is triggered somehow ,bringing on these emotions.
I could literally be fine and boom despair hits me .

Thank you for sharing your story . I have never had to take meds except for my thyroid medication …I don’t want to start them but I will have to consider it if I want to battle this.

Thank you for replying .
I do have strong menopausal symptoms. I actually saw a doctor last summer and discussed this with her . She wasn’t very helpful .
But I agree there might be a menopause connection .

@Lilimo67 There was a famous saying by a saint who cautioned people to always maintain a certain inner calmness because, he said, the devil fishes in troubled waters. Despair and hopelessness are sins against the first Commandment. It is for this reason that whenever a person is tempted to these sins it is certain that the devil is at work, even if he is not their principle cause. There is environment to consider, but there will always be the world, the flesh, and the devil at their very root. The sure remedy, regardless of the cause, is always the same. Prayer is the oxygen of the soul, said Padre Pio. Perseverance in prayer brings grace and grace brings trust and love in the Divine Providence of God. You say your struggle with despair is looking at the future. Don’t look at the future. The future is not in our hands, but in God’s. It’s better that way. We have only the present wherein to love Him. Avoiding the occasions of despair and hopelessness by having recourse to the prayer of the Holy Rosary does wonders.

Please ,let me make this clear …I don’t despair regarding the salvation of my soul.
I feel immense sadness and despair when these thought creep in once in a while . Not every issue is resolved with religion .

It might be worth having a chat to your medical professional, there could be an underlying medical reason for this that can be mitigated.

Please also consider that your feelings may be menopause related.
Menopause can really make some women become depressed and this might be due that there is a connection between Estrogen and Serotonin and as the Estrogen drops so does the Serotonin levels.
Some women even have psychosis when reach menopausal age but this is often not talked enough by G.P’s.
