Im thinking of starting a novena, but i have absolutely no experience what so ever.
Is there any “rules” when it comes to Novenas or may I start a novena at any point that I like.
Is there like a time to pray to the immaculate heart and Divine mercey that one has to/ should follow or is it really up to oneself?

Sorry for the ignorance that may appear in this thread, but as mentioned above I have absolutely no knowledge when it comes to novenas.

Thanks in advance for any replies I may recieve:)

Hi MarianCatholic!

There’s no stringent set of rules about how you must pray a novena.

Typically, you say a set of daily prayers. Usually, there’s a different prayer each day. Every novena can be slightly different, so some of them might have additional devotions attached with them.

A novena sometimes will have dates attached to it. For instance, the Divine Mercy novena is usually said starting on Good Friday and ending on Easter Saturday. However, you can always start them at any time and many do so. So don’t feel like you can’t pray it just because it’s not the more common time to do so.

Here’s a few novenas I’ve prayed before. I invite you to take a look at them to get a rough idea how they can vary. The oldest and most traditional novena is the novena to the Holy Spirit which is typically prayed right before Pentecost:

Novena to the Holy Spirit:

Divine Mercy Novena:

St John Vianney Novena:

Hope that helps!

I’ve only prayed two Novenas. One was to the Holy Spirit for Pentecost last year, and then I just finished the Divine Mercy novena. You can pray a Novena any time you like.

There are many excellent resources online. Some are more involved than others, and have extensive additional prayers.

You won’t regret it! 🙂
