How to pray the Rosary

I’m a Protestant on my home to the Catholic Church (praise God!). I was wondering, is it acceptable for me to pray the Rosary without Rosary beads? I ask because on EWTN’s website, it had that prayer listed as simply a sign of the cross, a creed, one Our Father, three Hail Mary’s, and one Glory be. Is that all that consists of the Rosary? Can I say this prayer without the beads? Thanks and God bless!

Yes, you can pray the Rosary without the beads.

However, the Blessing, Creed, Our Father, three Hail Mary’s and one Glory Be is just the start 🙂 The Rosary consists of five decades–sets of ten prayers—you meditate on one Mystery per decade.

If you look over to the side of EWTN’s website you’re talking about, the Mysteries are listed there, you could click on one at a time as you pray.

New Advent has a document simply titled, “How to recite the Holy Rosary” which can be found at newadvent.org/images/rosary.pdf.

This is the recitation of the rosary as it is commonly prayed today. It consists of five “Decades” of Hail Mary’s, during which we meditate on one of the mysteries of the life of Christ. It will take about 20 minutes to get through.

There used to be only three sets of mysteries. Blessed Pope John Paul II gave us the Luminous Mysteries more recently. It was formerly more common to pray all fifteen decades - the orginal Glorious, Sorrowful, and Joyous mysteries at on time and that can take up to an hour to get through, but now most people pray five decades at once as per the document.

Just meditate on the particular mystery, and think about that part of the life of Christ as you recite the Hail Mary’s. Some find this type of repetitious, meditative prayer daunting at first, but it is wonderful for those who persist and persevere.

That’s excellent about your coming into the Church - congratulations and warmest welcome!

You can pray the rosary without beads, sure. There are indulgences attached to using the blessed beads when you pray, though, so after Easter I would do that as often as its possible. 🙂
 
Congratulations on your “home coming”. Makes my heart joyful when folks elect to come into the church.

For personal reasons, I don’t say the Luminous Mysteries. There have been many threads on this topic here so I won’t go into them again.

For me the Rosary is the most wonderful prayer. I have called “addicted” to saying it as I have a Rosary on me all day. I don’t always use the beads as I work around the place but I figure as long as I have 10 fingers I can “git’r done”.

Sure, in fact I met an old army vet who said his Rosary on his fingers while fighting in France in 1944. Why not get a Rosary though, since you can?

Yes. You can do the Rosary without a Rosary.

I like this site. It lists the Mysteries associated with the Rosary at the top, with links to illustrations.

Step 5 and 8 are when you reflect on the Mysteries. It also guides you as to what day of the week each mystery is to be reflected upon. For Lent, the Sorrowful Mysteries are reflected upon on Sundays.

Echoing what everyone else has said with just a little humble comment.

When I was a child, I “recited” the rosary daily with my family. I still think it was good because we prayed as a family, although I saw it as more of a chore.

It was only more recently did I truly pray the rosary through contemplation of Jesus’ life through the mysteries. Since then, it has become so rich and beautiful. I pray that you find this as well.

p.s. It is only a tool, but a rosary helps keep my fingers busy so I can focus on Jesus more.
