Hi! This is probably a stupid question, but I don’t think I’ve ever prayed to saints before. I’d like to try, but I don’t really know how. Do you pray to them the same way you pray to God? What do saints do, exactly? What kind of prayer intentions can you say to saints? Does it matter which saint you pray to?

Thanks in advance!

No stupid question at all 🙂

How: Dear saint xy, pray for me… Basically, it is the formula of the Ave : Sancta Maria, mater dei, ora pro nobis peccatoribus…

It is not exactly the same way as ypu pray to God, because it is ONLY God who can grant prayers, but the saints may help you in praying - like ypur parish might pray for you if you’d have an acciddent or alike. They are members of the communion of saints, living and dead, all praying together 🙂

What intentions: Every single one!

Does it matter which saint? Hm, it matters for the purpose of personal identification witht he prayer and the saint. For example, Maria is called on quite frequently, no matter what intention the prayer has, but many saints had experiences during their live that makes them easy to identify with for some prayer intentions (then their patron saints), for example if a saint suffered very much and was delivered miraculously, he might become patron saint of hopeless cases, or if he was very found of studying,t he patron saint of students/teachers.

It is quite simple: you ask saints to pray to God what you want. For example: you are looking for a job. You pray to God to give you a job. Now, you come to a Saint, such as St. Jude and say “Dear St. Jude, please ask God to grant me a job”. 🙂

You can try this book: childmary.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=156

It contains different Novena to Saints: Anthony, Jude, Therese Little Flower, Rita, etc …

The book is less than $7

Cool! Thanks a bunch for the responses! Gonna give that a try tonight.

It’s kind of like coming here to the forum and going to the prayer intentions, asking all of us to pray for various people and their needs.

Except --you can pray to the saints without the Internet. You can pray without any ‘gadgets’. You can pray alone or with others, in the dark, in a church, in your home, in your car, morning, evening, anytime.

You can pray to any saint you choose, but some have been designated “patron saints” for various needs, either because they experienced those problems firsthand or because prayers for those needs have been favorably answered. There is a list at catholic-forum.com/saints/patron01.htm .
