I was doing some reading in the Douay Bible the other day and I noticed that the name given as Jesse in many other bibles is listed as Isai. This seemed very near Isaias and both things got me thinking. How are these and other such names normally pronounced by English speakers? Is Isaias just like Isaiah but with an ‘s,’ as in Eye-zay-us, and is Isai pronounced in a samilar way, e.g. Eye-zay(-ah)?

This kind of thing nags at me often when reading the Douay Bible. It is my preferred translation but I rarely know how any particular name may be pronounced, since it is so often unlike the same name in any other Bible or book. Does anyone happen to know of a resource for accepted pronunciation of such names?

I would pronounce Isai as EE-sigh.

I don’t know of any guides for pronuncing the names.

Just trying to bump this thread…

I am making a public domain recording of the Douay-Rheims and have come upon the Book of Numbers and wow does it have a lot of hard names! I have recorded Genesis and Exodus so far. (And I thought those names were difficult.)

If someone knew of where to look or who to speak with to start down the road of finding the correct pronunciations for these names, that would be most helpful. 🙂

In case you’re interested in the mp3s I have made so far, they are at:

I have made videos of these for YouTube as well.
