How to prove that Catholics don't worship the Pope?

I’ve been asked that and other similar questions before - my response is always “Really? How do you figure that?” Then they have to present what makes them think we worship Pope/Mary/Saints/Bread/Wine/Whatever. THEN we can have a dialogue.

I think the best way to prove this would simply be to point to the vast numbers of Catholics, both liberal and conservative, who like to criticize the current Pope.

I don’t understand why we have to prove anything.

People are like, “You worship the Pope” and I’m like, “Yeah, whatever. What’s for lunch?”

I agree. There is no compelling reason to argue with nonsense.

How to prove that Protestants don’t worship tater tots?

That’s how nauseatingly annoying it sounds when a Catholic hears, “ZOMG Catholics worship the Pope!!! n Mary toooo!!!”
Hahaha that is too funny.

How I feel when protestants call me a Mary worshipper: :banghead:

I used to be one of those protestants though. I totally believed the Pope was the antichrist and all that. I can’t say I’ve heard anyone say Catholics worship the Pope though, that’s a new one. If you really want to explain the Catholic position, first ask why the person believes this.

I can think of a couple things the protestant might say. The first thing is that we call the Pope “Holy Father”. There is a verse in the Bible, I forget where it is feel free to google it, that says not to call any man father because God is our true father. Jesus said it. But you can easily rebut this by saying that that same verse also says not to call any man your teacher, but protestants have no problem calling their teachers “teacher” nor their biological fathers “father”. It’s not meant to be taken so literally…

Another issue protestants might have (but this would probably depend on the type of protestant you’re talking to) is that you call the Pope “Holy” Father. Not only do Catholics call him father, but they call him holy! Some protestants believe that the only holy one around is God, that all humanity (aside from Jesus of course) is entirely depraved. They don’t believe that humans are good the way Catholics do. I believe the belief in total depravity is more of a calvinist thing though, so not all protestants believe that. But by calling the pope holy, it’s like saying he is more divine than the rest of us humans.

And then there are all the trappings we give our popes, even the popes we don’t really like. A palace, furs, an army, priceless art, flocks of fans, nuns to serve him… pretty much whatever he wants… If the protestant lives in an area where there is a monarchy, you could argue that we worship the pope in a similar sense to worshipping the Queen. It’s not like the Queen of England is this super dope chick and is worthy of all this honour and stuff because of who she is, but because of the position she holds. Where she lives and the gifts she receives don’t really have anything to do with her as a person, but are about the office she holds. Protestants mostly don’t have any understanding of what it really means to be an ordained Catholic. They don’t have an understanding of the Eucharist, they don’t know what it’s like to have Jesus truly present, to experience the life changing Sacraments, and that some of these sacraments can come to us only through priests. And to be not just a priest, but the Vicar of Christ, is just… I mean the Pope is the Vicar of Christ!!! We treat the Queen of England with a certain level of respect and give her palaces because she is the monarch, how much better is being the Pope than being the queen of some paltry earthly dynasty? They don’t even compare.

Yeah. It’s not something that really needs to be proven, because it’s so darn obvious (unless you’re living under a rock, that is). Pardon the language, but anyone with even a half-ounce of a brain can see that Catholics don’t consider the Pope to be God, or even as some sort of demigod.

If one wants a living avatar, check the Dalai Lama.

“How to prove that Catholics don’t worship the Pope.”

Attempting to prove a negative is a logical fallacy, as in the premise X is true because there is no evidence that X is false. Logically, the burden of proof is on the person proposing the truth of an assertion, not the one questioning its truth.

OP souldiver has a habit of opening threads with some pretty ridiculous topics and then not participating.

I no longer take his posts seriously but would be willing to reconsider should he care to respond to my repeated challenges.
