Ushers shouldn’t direct people who to go to Holy Communion. I receive on the tongue and have found that priests seem to understand that folded hands means I receive on the tongue. I have been to churches where extra-ordinary ministers of Holy Communion seem to be thrown by my wanting Holy Communion on the tongue. One in particular kept looking at my hands like “Come on put them out there, we don’t do this around here”.
Given the choice between receiving from my Pastor or my Bishop at my parish’s Confirmation service, I have chosen my Bishop, even when my Pastor’s line became empty. My Pastor recognized that about 10 of us had a preference, and was happy that we were honoring the Bishop with a sign of respect for his office. When I receive from my Pastor rather that an extra-ordinary minister of Holy Communion, I do it as a sign of respect for his office also. As my Pastor, he represents Christ to me. I understand he is not acting in Persona Christi giving Holy Communion, but as a priest he represents Christ to me.
