How to refute a claim

I listen to an “info-tainment” podcast occasionally, they talk about different subjects like sharks or ghost towns or any number of things. It was all fun and games until their Mormon episode. I have stopped listening because, in addition to spreading what I am sure is probably misinformation about Mormons, they decided it would be good while they were at it to take a stab at the Catholic Church as well. A man named Stuart Parker who claimed to be a “Mormon expert” said this:
“We for instance believe that Roman Catholics have always opposed abortion when in fact until 1858 they were the largest abortion provider in the world.”

What the heck? Anybody can throw out a fact that they claim to be true. I would love to write these guys an e-mail, buy I need some ammunition showing what they say is false.

I assuming that what you quoted above is all they said. If so, then I would ask them what evidence they had in regards to that statement. Let them come up with the information. Depending upon what source they used, it might be simpler to refute them, especially if they either misundestood what the source said or if the source is unreliable.

They quote a specific date, 1858. I would ask them what happened in 1858. That might be a good starting point.

There’s no need to refute it because it’s so stupid it refutes itself.

But, if you feel the absolute need, demand a source. They will, of course, be 100% unable to provide a legitimate source for this, at which point you’ll have been vindicated, even though they, as the idiots they likely are, will continue to believe their erroneous “fact.”

Asking for sources is always a good first step and can save a *lot *of time!
