**Matthew 15:3 **Jesus replied, "And why do you break the command of God for the sake of your tradition?

Matthew 15:6 he is not to 'honor his father with it. Thus you nullify the word of God for the sake of your tradition.

Mark 7:7-9 They worship me in vain; their teachings are but rules taught by men. 8 You have let go of the commands of God and are holding on to the traditions of men."** 9** And he said to them: "You have a fine way of setting aside the commands of God in order to observe your own traditions!

These verses are commonly used by Protestants to downplay Catholic tradition. I have heard time and time again from My Non Catholic friends that “it is not about tradition” “blah blah”, and they are going off these verses. I am aware of the many verses in which we are commanded to hold fast to traditions. So my queston is what is the context in which Jesus was talking here. I assume he was speaking about the Pharisees putting themselves before God?

He was not just speaking of the pharisees but anyone who puts there ways before God’s ways.

8 You have let go of the commands of God and are holding on to the traditions of men."** 9** And he said to them: "You have a fine way of setting aside the commands of God in order to observe your own traditions!

The interesting thing is that God had given them the authority to do so by letting them rule in Mose’s seat. Yet when the pharisees set aside the spirit of the law and began to be concerned only with the letter of the law they over stepped there boundries. Thus it became there ways and not God’s.

Hi Jacob, read Matthew 15 in context.

Command of God, “honor your parents”

Their tradition does in fact make that command void.

Their tradition does NOT make all of God’s word void.

Jesus is speaking of a specific tradition and a specific command.

He is not talking about the whole word of God, nor is he speaking about all traditions.
