There’s no “if” stated by Jesus in those verses, Eric. You’re adding that.
I never said that I was confining myself to just the verses you decided to cited. I’m considering this subject in the context of the rest of the New Testament as well. For example:
”For this is the will of my Father,
that every one who sees the Son and believes in him should have eternal life” (John 6:40, RSV,
emphasis added).
Therefore, believing in Jesus is contingent upon receiving eternal life. This is backed up with:
For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son,
that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.
For God sent the Son into the world, not to condemn the world, but that the world might be saved through him.
He who believes in him is not condemned; he who does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God. (John 3:16-18, RSV)
And he called for lights and rushed in,
and trembling with fear he fell down before Paul and Silas,
and brought them out and said, “Men, what must I do to be saved?”
And they said, “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved, you and your household.” (Acts 16:29-31, RSV)
”…if you confess with your lips that Jesus is Lord
and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead,
you will be saved.” (Romans 10:9, RSV)
But, as I’ve stated before, the question at hand is: What does it mean to believe in Jesus?
Here is what Scripture says:
Believing in Jesus Includes Obeying His Teachings
…the Father loves the Son, and has given all things into his hand.
He who believes in the Son has eternal life;
he who does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God rests upon him. (John 3:35-36, RSV)
"If you love me, you will keep my commandments.” (John 14:15, RSV)
”He who has my commandments and keeps them, he it is who loves me;
and he who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and manifest myself to him." (John 14:21, RSV)
And by this we may be sure that we know him, if we keep his commandments.
He who says “I know him” but disobeys his commandments is a liar, and the truth is not in him;
but whoever keeps his word, in him truly love for God is perfected. (1John 2:3-5, RSV)
Believing in Jesus Includes Being His Follower
”He who is not with me is against me, and he who does not gather with me scatters.” (Matthew 12:30, RSV)
Believing in Jesus Includes Imitating His Example
"Truly, truly, I say to you, he who believes in me will also do the works that I do” (John 14:12, RSV)
By this we may be sure that we are in him:
he who says he abides in him ought to walk in the same way in which he walked. (1John 2:5-6, RSV)
Beloved, if our hearts do not condemn us, we have confidence before God;
and we receive from him whatever we ask, because we keep his commandments and do what pleases him.
And this is his commandment, that we should believe in the name of his Son Jesus Christ and love one another, just as he has commanded us.
All who keep his commandments abide in him, and he in them. And by this we know that he abides in us, by the Spirit which he has given us. (1John 3:21-24, RSV)
Believing in Jesus Includes Not Denying Him
So every one who acknowledges me before men,
I also will acknowledge before my Father who is in heaven;
but whoever denies me before men,
I also will deny before my Father who is in heaven. (Matthew 10:32-33, RSV)
Who is the liar but he who denies that Jesus is the Christ?
This is the antichrist, he who denies the Father and the Son.
No one who denies the Son has the Father. He who confesses the Son has the Father also.
Let what you heard from the beginning abide in you. If what you heard from the beginning abides in you, then you will abide in the Son and in the Father.
And this is what he has promised us, eternal life. (1John 2:22-25, RSV)
Believing in Jesus Means Doing Works of Mercy
Matthew 25:31-40 – The Parable of the Sheep and the Goats
By this we know love, that he laid down his life for us;
and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren.
But if any one has the world’s goods and sees his brother in need, yet closes his heart against him, how does God’s love abide in him?
Little children, let us not love in word or speech but in deed and in truth.
By this we shall know that we are of the truth, and reassure our hearts before him. (1John 3:16-19, RSV)
You see that a man is justified by works and not by faith alone.
And in the same way was not also Rahab the harlot justified by works when she received the messengers and sent them out another way?
For as the body apart from the spirit is dead, so faith apart from works is dead. (James 2:24-26, RSV)
