How to respectfully destroy/discard something

My wife is a convert from Mormanism. She has the book of Mormon with the St. James Bible included. We are clearing out old stuff and would like to get rid of it, but it’s full of notes that she wouldn’t want others to read. How can we respectfully discard it?

Fire? As a child, I remember burning an old American Flag respectfully folded and placed in a fire in an almost ceremonious fashion.

You can burn or bury blessed items to respectfully discard of them.

In this case, I wouldn’t have a problem recycling it seeing as it’s not blessed. But if you and your wife prefer, you could certainly do that.

Burning is generally considered a respectful way to get rid of something with a religious or patriotic meaning.

I would also suggest giving it to your priest to dispose of, except that you said your wife has notes in it that she doesn’t want anyone to read, and that might make her uncomfortable giving it to her priest, even if he swears he won’t look at the notes.

I think they do not want to do that because of the notes written inside. Otherwise, that would be a good option.

Whatever you do, don’t throw it in the recycling or trash. The trash collector could take serious scandal at it. If I saw a Bible in the trash I would be shocked, and upset.
