If one neglects the poor today, one can make up for it double tomorrow. If one aborts a child or allows a child to be aborted today, that’s the end of the story.

I think your MIL has her heart in the right place but doesn’t see the costs.

She wants to see the poor & marginalized assisted which is a wonderful thing. I would point out absolutely we should be doing everything to help the poor & marginalized then lead on to the vulnerable and the weak those who can’t defend themselves refer to scripture “do it to the least you do it to me” I would also point out the fact that being complicit in an evil act can not be atoned for no matter how many good works you do.

This one also seems to be driven by a good motivator. Your MIL wants people to feel welcome no matter how damaged by sin and Christ wants us all to come to him.

I’d point out that saying it’s ok to do something wrong to make a person feel better is not really loving them at all and would create a bigger disaster. Then equate it with saying we
should allow insert extreme socially distasteful activity here because we would be
judging them.

Very good advice, thank you!

Thanks for all of the advice! Very good insights! Part of the problem is that her brother is a priest, and he holds these same views himself. Naturally she believes him over me. The other thing I have noticed is that they will listen to a homily at Mass, and then twist its meaning to fit their views. I was with them at Mass when the priest spoke about religious freedom and the HHS mandate, and they took it to mean the exact opposite of what was intended…they thought the priest was saying the mandate is a good thing, and when the priest said that we can’t take away a person’s freedom of religion, they actually took that to mean that the Church can’t be against same sex marriage. I heard the same homily, and that is DEFINITELY NOT what the priest meant.

I am wondering if I should even try to convince them of the truth, or just pray for them.
