I have a friend who identifies as a non-denominational Christian (he does not believe in any formal “religion” but that all answers are found in the Bible alone and given to us through God’s grace).

He recently asked if Catholics believe that Jesus was God. I said yes, that Jesus was fully human and fully divine. He said he did not agree, that he believes Jesus was a man who “embodied” God’s spirit but was merely human. Is that belief even compatible with the basic principles of Christianity? How can I respond and defend the Catholic teaching on this?

Thank you in advance!!!

The central tenant of Christianity that Jesus is divine was settled at the Council of Nicea in 325. This decree was necessary to combat the heresy of Arianism. Even most “non-denominational” groups accept the Council of Nicea. Your friend might need to find a different group to worship with since his beliefs might not even be compatible with theirs.

For an in-depth look into this I recommend Tim Staples’ Jesus is God tract.
