The name of a church does not equate to its historicity or authenticity.
It’s a very good guage
c:
The church was not called “catholic” for at least a few decades after the church got started.
The English word Catholic is a transliteration of the Greek katholikos which is a compound word from kata, which means according to, and holos, which means whole.
So one THEN can ask, where does kata holos appear in scripture and particularly
kata holos ekklesia ?
Acts 9:31 the church throughout all
ἐκκλησία,
καθ’,
ὅλης ,
τῆς ,Judea and Galilee and Sama’ria…" = The Kataholos Church.
c1:
An Orthodox could argue that the Church was very well universally known as the Catholic Church
And they would be correct.
c1:
but had to call itself the Orthodox Church to distinguish it from those who claimed to be Catholic but really went into schism because of Rome.
Because of Rome? It’s the same ole story, some bishops have problems with authority, and particularly anybody being over THEM, so they go into sedition or schism. Consider Clements letter to the Church of Corinth settling sedition among THEIR bishops. This was DURING the life of St John the apostle.
This argument over primacy was actually waged in of all places, after the last supper in the upper room between the apostles.
Jesus settled the argument
Lk 22:
24A dispute also arose among them as to which of them was considered to be greatest
μείζων. 25Jesus said to them, “The kings of the Gentiles lord it over them; and those who exercise authority over them call themselves Benefactors.
26But you are not to be like that. Instead, the greatest
μείζωνamong you should be like the youngest, and the one who rules
ἡγούμενοςlike the one who
serves.
27For who is greater, the one who is at the table or the one who serves? Is it not the one who is at the table? But I am among you as one who serves.
28You are those who have stood by me in my trials.
29And I confer on you a kingdom, just as my Father conferred one on me,
30so that you may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom and sit on thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.
31“Simon, Simon, Satan has asked to sift all of you as wheat.
32But I have prayed for you, Simon, that your faith may not fail. And when you have turned back, strengthen
στήρισον your brothers.”

*]Did Jesus confirm one of THEM is the greatest? Yes
*]Did the one who is greatest lobby for the position? No. He was selected
*]Did Jesus confirm this one would rule? Yes
*]Did Jesus promise to pray especially for this one who would rule over the entire kingdom? Yes
*]Who is this man who is to rule and have primacy over the entire Church? Peter. Argument over.
Jesus established the hierarchy in His Church with Peter at the helm, as THE leader, and not even hell will prevail against it. Yet Satan sifts, and he always seems to find willing participants who try to destroy that. What’s new?
