A friend of mine commented on Catholic communion. He said how he didn’t understand, becaus ehe felt like it was making Jesus suffer over and over. I didn’t know how to reply. Advice?

Catholic theology is clear that Jesus does not suffer over and over in the Eucharist. Why? Because the Eucharistic sacrifice is one and the same sacrifice from Calvary, re-presented to the faithful in an unbloody manner. It is not another sacrifice of Jesus. It is the one and only sacrifice of Jesus.*Catechism #1367 The sacrifice of Christ and the sacrifice of the Eucharist are one single sacrifice: “The victim is one and the same: the same now offers through the ministry of priests, who then offered himself on the cross; only the manner of offering is different.” “And since in this divine sacrifice which is celebrated in the Mass, the same Christ who offered himself once in a bloody manner on the altar of the cross is contained and is offered in an unbloody manner. . . this sacrifice is truly propitiatory.”*Couple articles also might help if you want more on this.

Jesus, our Lords peace be whit You.
Jesus suffered once and for all ONE time. He did so to free us from sin, communion,if we think about what He says in the Bible (Matt.26:-26-28) about communion,it is moore to rememeber Him,as well as our way to be part of Him. I truly beleive that both the wine and the bread realy changes form, whitout making it look different. And that is why communion, and confession, are the ways we can come closer to Him then in any other way.

Great advise above…👍

The one thing that I would say, in reference to MarcoPolo’s comment on the Eucharist being “re-presented”, is that I prefer to use slightly different terminology. I prefer to say that the Eucharist is the one Sacrifice, “made present” through time. By this “making present” we are transported to Calvary to be present at that “one sacrifice”.

Perhaps subtle distinctions but sometimes different people intigrate things in different ways. It’s good to have some differing ways of expressing the same thought.

Peace
James
