How do I respond when someone asks me how to gain eternal life?

Would “believe, be baptized, and obey” work?

Sure, but you should also be prepared that they’re going to throw 1 John 3 and 1 John 5:13-15 at you and claim that all you need is to believe (that good old sola fide tripe).

As is the case, read the whole of the chapters referenced because both are in keeping with your answer given their proper context (eg: 1 John 5 spends 12 verses talking about how believing means loving God and loving God means obeying commandments before it says that those who believe will be saved).

It’s a good question and one that should be asked by all men.Although your answer is a good one,you may need a little tweaking, rather than being elaborate, perhaps keep it simple as the question being asked is simple in itself.Just respond "through Christ,"then,on to the next question.

God bless,

From page 22:

But How ARE Catholics Saved?
from the Catechism of the Catholic Church
Too often non-Catholics have never heard or read what the Catholic Church truly teaches on issues like
Salvation or Justification. They have only too often accepted uncritically what Her antagonists say She teaches.
What makes it doubly difficult is that the non-Catholic gospel is very easily simplified into four or five “Spiritual
Laws” or a convenient collection of six to eight verses called “The Roman Road,” while the Catholic teaching
on Salvation and Justification is a much wider and deeper understanding of Scripture and Tradition not easily
reducible to a simple formula. As a result, Catholics are sometimes stymied when they are asked to describe succinctly
“How are Catholics saved?”

First you have to know the circumstances. If someone is seconds from death, it is quite different than someone who is just starting their inquiry. A lot of Protestants like to post the question and then switch it up after they have your answer.
First, give them the, well if I was with someone who was just seconds from death, I would encourage them to recognize the Jesus is our Saviour(believe) and repent their sins and then baptize them.
After that, you can discuss what is expected of a Christian who is to follow Chirst.
