Hello
I want to ask, is wrong to see, or to consider, the pope as a semi-God or a semi-Divine person.
I think that in the past, pre-modern or pre-contemporaneous times, the popes was seen by the (overzealous) people as a semi-God person.
PS: I want for this questions only catholic answers.
Thank you

Yes it is wrong.
No, popes were NOT seen as ‘semi God persons’ by the ‘overzealous’ if you are implying that this was the view of many or most people. People are not that stupid, really. Don’t fall into the trap of thinking that ‘not modern’ people were not smart enough to distinguish the CONSTANT teaching of the Church for the last 2000 years that the Pope is a man like other men whose JOB happens to be that of leading the Church FOR Christ.

No, the pope is not semi-divine. He has special authority and assistance from God, but he is 100% human.

He does have promise of Christ that if he feeds the sheep …the HS will not depart from him…with regards to his Office. He and his Bishops can bind and loose. This is Biblical promise…and the authority of Christ resides in he and the magisterium.

Who has ever seen the pope as a “semi-divine” person? He is a man who as successor to Peter is appointed to lead the Church. A human being.

Thank you for answers. Got it!
I think that i should to study more. Sorry for asking 🙂

The Church is not about the Pope it is, and always has been, about Christ our Lord. The Pope is there to guide us along his path and spread the Gospel with the world.

May wanto to read the CCC (Catechism of the Catholic Church) It’s online.
There is no Catholic teaching, nor has there ever been the Pope is semi-divine/God
what have you.
Mary.

The only persons who I can think of that would say such things are non-Catholics, who misunderstand the nuances of what infallibility means, or who think we see the “Vicar of Christ” as becoming like Christ in nature. But no, we do not worship or hold the Pope as even being semi-divine.

Please don’t be sorry for asking; that is how we learn. I hope you will always feel free, here on CAF, to ask any questions you have.

It is completely wrong and erronious.

The Pope is the Chief Pastor of The Catholic Church.
