I’m wondering if anyone can comment on the book titled “How to Serve” by Dom Matthew Britt, O.S.B. It appears to be a handbook or instruction book for altar servers.

Please, my intent is not to debate types of Mass’ or pre vs post Vatican II Mass. I am sincerely looking for recommendation on the relevance of this book for altar servers in an ordinary yet very reverant, suburban USA parish in 2011. My concern is its relevance today given that it was produced in 1934 and references things like sub-deacons and such which are no longer used.

Having said that, I’m probably going to buy it out of interest alone. My suspicion is that, as an adult altar server myself, there is some value in it if only to learn how to handle the thurible better. The section on how to serve at a bennediction has me particularly interested and excited.

Any thoughts from anyone who has read this work would be appreciated.

Is the Mass you serve the OF of the Mass: the one of Pope Paul VI said in English? If so, this book may be of limited value to you since the instructions will all be for the EF of the Mass, or Traditional Latin Mass. Others may also have comments or more information for you.
