How to start NFP?

Hi,

My husband and I attended a class on NFP when we were engaged, and decided that we didn’t have a really good reason not to have children right away, should God bless us with them, so we didn’t continue with the class. Four children later, I’d like to try NFP. My husband is currently using barrier methods (I’m not totally comfortable with this, but I think not having intimacy in our marriage is more of a detriment than using barrier methods). He has said he’d like to have a vasectomy. He knows I don’t approve and at least for now, he is holding off on this. (A little background…. I’m a practicing Catholic and I’ve come a long way since I was married 8 years ago. My husband was baptized Catholic and he attends Mass each week with our family, but right now, he’s somewhere between agnostic and atheist. He’s a really great man, though, and I’m praying he’ll come around:gopray2: )

If I can get up and running with NFP, I think he will be okay with using that as birth control and it will stop the vascetomy talk. Our oldest is six, and our youngest is 9 months. I’m awake at so many random hours throughout the night (i.e. baby has to eat, someone has a bad dream, someone wet the bed) that I don’t know if NFP will work for us right now. How can I go about starting NFP when it seems like every night I’m waking up at all different hours? Life with 4 little ones is wonderful, but it’s really hectic and we don’t live close to any where that offers a class, (besides, I don’t think I’d be able to get my husband to go again and we don’t have babysitters anyway) so retaking the class really isn’t an option right now.

Any advice would be helpful.

Prayers for your situation…

nfpandmore.org has an online NFP manual and charts.

The book Taking Charge of your Fertility by Toni Weschler is supposed to be a good resource, if you ignore the barrier method stuff, as it’s against Church teaching.

As for taking temps with disturbed sleep, I’ve never had a problem getting good temps even with night waking. All women, are different, though. I set my alarm for 6 am and take my temp at that time every day, even if I woke up a lot. If it’s important to you, you will do it. If you want to start charting, then you just need to do it–start tomorrow. Write down your observations and study the online manual or get the book.

There are also mucous only methods and a method that uses a fertility monitor. Here are the links to various methods:

God bless you!

Check into the Naprotechnology also called the Creighton Method. It doesn’t require that you do temps… It relies on the mucus. I would also recommend reading “Theology of the Body for Beginners” by Christopher West.

Thanks, Jennifer J. I’ll look for the books you recommend.

I can start charting tomorrow. I had been charting a little, but stopped b/c I didn’t think it was meaningful if I was waking so much and with all the waking, I was just so tired. If I wake up at 3:30am, can I still take a temp at 5am? Also, if someone has me awake at 4 or 4:30 and I don’t get back to sleep, what should I do about the 5am reading? I’m not trying to be difficult - it’s just that right now, we’re not on the best sleep schedule here. The baby was only waking once a night around 5am, but we went away on vacation and now he seems to be up around 3 and again at 5. It seems like at least one of the other 3 wakes up each night, so it really is interupted sleep. I’m hoping this won’t continue and in a month or two, I won’t have a problem charting. I just really do want to start this right away.

I temp at 6am no matter what. I then just mark the temp as disturbed, esp if it appears to be waaaay off. I have read that just 1 hour of “sleep” is needed to get an accurate reading. Let me see if I can find the reference. Cross checking with cervix and mucous will help you as well. For me, as I said before, disturbed sleep doesn’t appear to affect my temps too much. You’ll have to see what yours are doing 😉
