How to teach children about poverty

Look into sponsoring a child or elderly person through Christian Foundation for Children and Aging. When it comes to putting a face on poverty there’s nothing quite like developing a relationship and getting letters from a poor person in another country.

Also, consider giving your child the gift of “want” this Christmas. If your child always gets what he eants, you haven’t given him that gift. Oh what was that phrase- there’s two things that are bad for children: never getting what they want and always getting what they want.

Also I don’t know much about your family situation, but consider giving your child the gift of more brothers and sisters. On average, the poor have larger families than the rich.

That is true for all of us, isn’t it? It does us good to learn to take it in stride when we have to make do without. It is very stressful, though, to always have your sleep interrupted and your stomach churning, because of the thought that there is not going to be enough to get by. 😦

WiccanWoman,

Excellent suggestions! Near and dear to me as well, which is probably why I went into social work.

Gracepoole,

Absolutely!!!

EasterJoy,

Very true.
