How to tell parents that I'm leaving my Islamic fate...?

When you describe your parents as “radical Islam,” I worry that they will get violent with you if you tell them you are thinking of leaving Islam. We in the United States have had “mercy killings” when a Muslim girl tries to marry out of her faith, or for other reasons as well. I think you need to get expert advice on this and have patience about telling your parents. As the other posters have said, the government is not going to protect you if your parents decide that what you are doing will shame the family and they hurt you in some way,.
THIS!! We had an honor killing right here in Tampa about a year ago and if I remember correctly it was for something really small like a woman talking to another man. Please be careful and like I said earlier it may be wise to wait until you are of the age of majority before you convert. Will be praying for you.

DISCLAIMER: I am not suggesting the op to put himself in danger if at all possible.

Dying a martyr of Christ is the highest honor one can aspire for. Better to have the crown of a martyr than to postpone conversion to Christ. Of course use discretion in all this.

Yeah, “honor killing” is what I meant. Very frightening, and that was not even someone who was converting!

The young women who have died in “honor killings” were not necessarily converting. In fact, I have only heard of cases where the young lady was dating a non-Muslim or doing something that is not allowed in Islam.

And God doesn’t ask martyrdom of most people. I would never advise someone to assume that God is asking for his death!

Of course if you would have read my disclaimer… 😉

“DISCLAIMER: I am not suggesting the op to put himself in danger if at all possible.”

I am not suggesting that God is asking for his death. I am saying that it is better to convert to Christianity inspite of danger than to postpone it. The history of the Church Martyrs support my opinion. 🙂

If your parents insist that you stick with Islam or threaten you, then please say this to the priest as you speak with him. I only say this because then he will understand, if he don’t already, your own need to practice the Catholic Faith at home of which he will be able to guide you in a way that you can do so without your parents being aware of it until you are old enough to do your own thing. If you can get hold of books like you have done then you have a certain amount of freedom. Use the freedom you have but keep in with your parents. How to tell them. I am just guessing but my response would be to ask the Priest for any insights of what you can say to any questions the parents may ask you. Any families that have strong practising religions do not like a member going off to the other from what it seems. Have your own personal reason ready about why you want to change. Share this with the Priest and he will guide you hopefully, on how to use that reason.

Be honest, be plain, don’t be rude. Say nothing about Islam not being whatever it isn’t doing for you. Don’t make it an Islam versus Catholicism. Just say why you want to convert. Do acknowledge why you think Islam works for your parents. But say why converting to Catholic Faith is important to you. Dont be clever in your discussion. It may even be your parents might be aware of you drifting. Continue to show honour to your parents and family.

Listen to what they say but simply state your own faith and why Catholicism attracts you. What brings you to Catholic Church. Ask if you can go to a Catholic Service, ask your parents if they would go with you even. Include them into the spiritual journey. Some people are broad minded and some aren’t. Let the priest know which service if you all do go along, so that he can be your ‘friend’ in that service and perhaps someone can be nominated to help you through those weeks because for anyone Church is confusing and a little bit of friendly guidence and a smile from people go a long way.

Hope it goes well with the priest, I am sure it will

Omar I will pray for you but for your own sake depending on where you live and how radical your family is you my be endangering your life. It’s my understanding in the Islamic faith that all the famly members have to be Muslim or else the whole family or maybe just the parents don’t make it into heaven or are considered to be in disgrace. I may be wrong on this so but I think tht’s what I’ve heard they believe especially if it’s a radical fundementalist sort of believer. I’m not judging anyone here or any faith to each his own but f would proceed carefully and pray for GOD’s guidence. It may be more judicious to wait till you are of age and have more control over your own destiny and maybe are on you own before you officially come out as a convert. Just saying.

Yes but his desire to convert applies under baptism of desire so there is no need for him to risk his life or welfare to have a chance at eternal salvation.

Like I said, “The history of the Church Martyrs support my opinion.” You are entitled to you opinion and I mine. Read about the 40 Martyrs of Sebaste. A soldier voluntarily announced himself to be a Christian and joined the other 39. Church history supports my opinion. 🙂

Well if you had to add that disclaimer, why post your message in the first place?

Dear Omar, i pray for you to have courage, support, protection and wisdom during your journey.

My heart goes with you because even though i haven’t been raised Islamic fate, i understand the fear to betrayal God, not understanding that Jesus is the son of God and not just a great prophet.

My advice, is to pray and to ask for guidance from the Holy Spirit.

I pray for you that all goes well, please have no fear, God is with you.

Blessings and love!

If at all possible, he should protect himself. However, if asked, he should not deny his faith in Christ.

Read about St Ahmed the Calligrapher and Martyr: orthodoxwiki.org/Ahmed_the_Calligrapher
I never said he should deny his faith, but that he should remain silent and not officially convert until he can do so safely. If he is asked flat out he should not deny Christ no matter the circumstances.

That was a response to TheRealJuliane about my disclaimer. I am not accusing anyone of the above statement concerning denying Christ. 🙂

Thank you for your kind words, tips and prayers, Chantal25, Luvz2travel and Englishredrose. God bless all of you, and everyone who’ve taken their effort to send me a PM, friend request and reply on this post. It means a lot to me, to know that there are other people out there, who I can trust on, and talk about stuff related to conversion (?). 🙂 (BTW, VERY interesting conversation you had about martyrs. :D)

My whole family and all my relatives aren’t radical. My father is liberal, but he’s probably the only one among all my relatives (Lord, they must be count by the hundreds… :p). I think he may accept that I believe in something different, but problems will certainly come along.

Matthew 10:16 [Christ said to the Apostles] “Behold, I send you out as sheep in the midst of wolves. Therefore be wise as serpents and harmless as doves.

Use discretion and wisdom. Read the Scriptures and study the faith (even if you have to wait a while for baptism).

You are in my prayers. 🙂

I just told them. :eek::eek::eek:

Me: Sitting in car, with my dad There’s a reason why I haven’t read The Quran, neither the prayers lately. (We just had a big fight about it.)
Dad: Yeah?
Me: I’m Catholic.
Dad: What? You’re, huh!?
Me: I’m Catholic.
Dad: Oh no, what kind of ideas have you made this time.
Me: I have not made any ideas. On Thursday, I did not go to the city hall to speak with the socialist party. I lied. I went to church, and recieved The Euachrist. Walks out of the door, past my siblings and then head for my aunt’s house about 100 yard away

*As I thought everything was going fine, my dad called me into my cousin’s room at my aunt’s house. *

Me: Yes?
Dad: What am I hearing about your religion? (I had already told my sister, she probably told him when they were walking to the house)
Me: Like, what? I’m Catholic.
Dad: Were did you go on Thursday.
Me: I went to church.
Dad: Son, it is quite normal for people at your age to doubt their faith. I am not angy at you, but what am I going to tell your mother?
Me: You know what? I don’t want to have this discussion. I am, and will forever be Catholic in my heart. Walk out of the room, heads for the kitchen
*
OK, I had probably given him two heart strokes by then, but only five minutes later he walks into the kitchen, confronting me with his arguments again.*

Dad: You know, it is very common to doubt your religious belief when you reach the age of puberty.
Me: Very well, then.
Dad: Are you really sure you want to be Catholic, what am I supposed to tell your mother when you aren’t praying?
Me: Oh, please.
Dad: Please, what? I do not know what your problem is, but I think you’re confused.
Me: Well, according to you, I am. But I know for sure that it is my right belief.
Dad: Oh, God…

An akward silence then followed… It lasted from the moment in the kitchen, 08:10 PM to approximately 23:30 PM… That’s when we got home from our visit at my aunt’s house.

Dad: Is it your friends that have forced or brainwashed you?
Me: What the F*CK!?
Dad: Yeah, I mean you have some friends that are Catholic.
Me: Oh, please! The decicion I’ve made is mine, and MY OWN.
Dad: Yeh’ right…

Blah, blah, blah, some time passes. My sister decides that she absolutely has to tell my mom, so she does. I’m in my room cleaning my budgie’s cage when I hear whispering voices and arabic “Astaghfirullah”'s (Oh My God) from the living room. Soon after, I decide to watc TV…

Dad: You sure your friend haven’t influenced you.
Me: You know, I can go right back to my room if you want to?
Dad: No, but I’m wondering, has xxx (Friend) influenced you?
Me: No! What the heck is hard for you to understand? My friends are ATHEIST.
Dad: But how did you get involved with The Catholic Church.
Me: It’s not your business to know how, where and when I became Catholic.
Dad: Well, at leats think about it.
Me: What should I think about!? It is my desicion, I have choose to believe in the same God as you, but I have a different view on prayers, saints, Our Lord Jesus, etc.
Dad: You know, our religion has been passed down, generation to generation since the 7th century.
Me: I don’t care whether it is tradition or not. It is my religion. You cannot force me to follow your religion, simply because it is a tradition.
Dad: I told your mom. She is probably going to get nuts. She says that it is a great sin to leave the religion. It only takes one sentence to become a member of the Islamic Community (Ummah).
Me: Good to know, anything else?
Dad: Yeah, you’re leaving the religion of your forefathers.
Me: I don’t want this discussion with you. Good night.

*I then proceeded to walk back to my room, and turn on the computer. And here I am! 😃 Everything went better than expected… I think… Just got to watc out for assains tonight, LOL. Oh Lord, I shouldn’t joke about that… Well, that’s my story. 🙂 *

Well, I think you were actually quite belligerent about it, if this is a true recounting of the conversations, you seemed as though you were just waiting to be nasty to your father. You could have answered him with a lot more charity.

“No, Dad, no one influenced me. It comes from the Holy Spirit.”

“Yes, Dad, I am determined to be Catholic. It’s OK, I still love you and Mom.”

Etc.

You really should not have taken the Eucharist yet, you’re not in any way prepared. Have you even talked to the priest yet?
