how to use holy water

quick question about holy water…

what pryer do you say when you sprinkle holy water in rooms in your house…how many times do you say the prayer

how much holy water do you sprinkle…do you just do the four corners…or the rest of the room and furniture too…

how long does the room stay “blessed” from the holy water before you have to do it again

i’ve never been told how to do this so i would appreciate anyone who can help me

It is the priest who does this blessing. He knows all the prayers, or if not, he has a Book of Blessings that he can use. You don’t have to do this by yourself.

It is customary to invite the priest over for the evening, and give him supper after he has finished doing the blessing of the house. You can also invite other friends to come, too, and make a social event of it. 🙂

The house stays blessed until you move out and sell it to someone else. If you do a big renovation (like adding extra rooms, etc.), it’s also a good idea to have the house blessed again after the renovations are completed.
 
i think you misunderstood my question…i was just asking about using holy water in my home (i read others on the forum do the same…some do it each evening)…i was just wondering how much to use and whether i need to say a prayer…eg st michael prayer etc…
i wasn’t asking how to bless holy water…i know that the priest does that and that he does house blessings…i was just asking about using holy water in my home…
i probably didn’t phrase my question clear enough

The priest I was working with told me to sprinkle holy water around my house once per week after he blessed it, but my house was also haunted before. So maybe that depends…??

When I sprinkle holy water around the house I dip my fingers in and sort of flick it around. In the bedrooms I use more than in the other rooms. I make sure to get all the windows, and I try to make sure to sprinkle around doors as well especially into and out of the house. I don’t say any prayers while I do it, I wasn’t instructed to but sometimes I am asking God to send down his angels to supplement the holy water.

I also will bless my living room and main living areas before and after having company wiht holy water, not all the time, but I do it when I feel like I need to. I just randomly flick it around the room. Especially if I am having a party where people might bring guests that I don’t know.

Once or twice some things have happened in my house that scared me bad enough to sprinkle the holy water and then take a sip and pray. Not sure if you are supposed to do that but I did.
 
My house has been blessed by a priest so I don’t bless each of the rooms. I do keep holy water in the house and use it before I pray and sometimes if I feel restless before I go to sleep. And I use it on the children when they are feeling restless or had a nightmare.
 
I think that I know what you may mean…

I have a certain family vistor that I really need some spiritual warfare going on to get through the visit…

So, I cross the doors to each room, with Holy Water on my thumb, where I can see the water on the wall or trim, and say…

In the Name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit protect our home from evil.

Harsh, but much needed for this type of visit.

Because I’m not a priest, I really don’t consider this a blessing…I see it just as a protection tool…so I do this ever how often I feel the need.

Our house has been blessed by a priest–we did it soon after we moved in. We now have a Holy Water font by the front door and we bless ourselves as we leave the house. I have never felt the need to bless the house in any additional way. One poster here did describe how she sprinkled/sprayed Holy Water on the beds each time she chnaged the sheets. I like that idea but have never done it.

Glad I’m not the only one!
 
You can anoint your house with the Holy Water as often as you feel necessary. To make the sign of the cross and say “In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit” at every door and window is a great way to do this. Evil will not enter when faith is strong enough!

I have even put Holy Water (a few drops) in my husbands coffee when he starts with his temper… It works!

This is a truly awesome thread! I have wanted to bless my apartment for some time. My priest blessed it for me a while back but I would love to use holy water as a protection against evil and such. Thank you all for posting this!
 
I read somewhere on this forum that someone puts holy water in a spray bottle and sprays the house weekly with the spray bottle. Pretty clever, I think.
