How to wear a scapular?

And your cloth scapulars will wear out with time and they will need replacing, but you only have to be invested once and all the following scapulars wonā€™t have to be blessed againā€¦
 
what is the difference between the Brown Scapular and the Green One? The Green Scapular that was given to me does not have two cloths, only one, and it is much larger than the Brown Ones I have seen. It has an image of Our Lady on one side with Her Immaculate Heart, and on the otherside Her pierced immaculater Heart.

The small brown scapular commonly worn as a sacramental by laypersons is directly related to the large brown scapular worn by Carmelite religious as part of their habit.

The green scapular is technically not a scapular, in that it is not associated with the habit of any religious community. It is still commonly known as a scapular, though, because it is a cloth sacramental worn as clothing. The green scapular originated from a reported apparition of Mary to Sister Justine Bisqueyburo of the Daughters of Charity in 1840. In this apparition Mary appeared holding in her Immaculate Heart in her right hand and a scapular in her left hand. Mary reportedly told Sister Justine that God desired to establish among mankind an increased love of His Most Beloved Mother by means of devotion to her Immaculate Heart with the green scapular used as a sacramental to promote this devotion. Just so you know, from all I was able to find out, when you are enrolled it needs to be with the cloth one and then you can switch it to the medal. Also, although a person doesnā€™t need to get each successive cloth scapular blessed after the first one - they do need to get each successive medal blessed. I donā€™t really understand the second rule, however Iā€™ve read it on practically all websites (ones who should know, like the main Carmelite website) that mentioned the medal.šŸ¤·

Maybe it was part of what Pope St. Pius V wrote.:confused:

This is probably correct. I have been present at investitures where some of the participants brought a scapular medal instead if a cloth scapular. The priest just borrowed a cloth scapular from another participant, invested the first person in the cloth scapular, then removed the scapular and returned it to its owner. The first person then wore the medal thereafter.
 
I like to think of the Scapular as being sort of similar to a wedding ring in much as itā€™s a sign that shows satan that I belong to someone; that Iā€™m already ā€œtakenā€.

Hi. This is a great discussion and it leads me to ask a question I have about the scapular. My betrothed wears the scapular and would be pleased to have me wear one, as well. I hesitate because I already wear a miraculous medal and I know that the chain and strings will intertwine and Iā€™ll end up having to seperate them constantly. Will I still have the benefits associated with the scapular if I pin it inside my clothing? Thanks.

I wear both a brown scapular and a miraculous medal on a chain. Sometimes they do twist together, but I donā€™t have to untangle them more than once a day. It isnā€™t a big deal. Usually the reason scapulars tangle up is because the strings are too long. If you shorten them up so that they are just long enough for the scapular to fit over your head it will tangle much less.

The scapular is usually worn under the outer clothing. You can pin it in place if you want to, although it probably isnā€™t necessary, and I wouldnā€™t want the pin opening up while I was wearing it.

Just shorten them, then:

Figure out how short you can go by pinching the strings near one of the cloth ends of the scapular as you put it over the widest part of your head so it will just fit. Add about an inch. Cut the strings at that point. Cut the excess string ends from the cloth end you just cut off the scapular. Finally, re-sew the strings back to the cloth end.

As long as youā€™re cutting the strings anyway, you may just want to replace them with fabric ribbon. It will last longer and be more comfortable. Be sure you get clothing-quality ribbon of the sort used to make spaghetti straps in womenā€™s clothing. There is a similar looking but lower quality ribbon used for craft projects. It will not last as long as the clothing-quality ribbon and the color may bleed if it becomes wet with perspiration or when you wash it. Any good fabric store can sell you the right ribbon. You will probably only need about two feet.
 
Our Lady of Fatima appeared as Our Lady of Mt Carmel on Oct 13, 1917 in the final apparition when the miracle of the sun was seen by tens of thousands. She had the Rosary in one hand and the Brown Scapular in the other hand. Our Lady said that the Scapular and the Rosary are inseparable.
Our Lady came to earth to share this as part of the Fatima message. How important the scapular and the rosary are to obtain grace for our souls.
 
is it true that whoever dies wearing the scapular will never suffer eternal fire?
 
When the priest enrolls you in the order when receiving the brown scapular, is it just a prayer, or is there a more formal enrollment? What happens?

It is a private revelation which should not be understood superstitiously. However, If a person enrolled in the scapular uses this sacramental in a manner that helps keep him close to Jesus and Our Lady, I fail to see how such a person could be in danger of damnation.

It is a relatively short prayer, but it could be part of a more formal ceremony, such as doing the enrollment at the end of a Mass or making it part of a benediction service.
