I’ve decided to write to my bishop to get a clear ruling whether or not something is a mortal sin.

How do I address the letter? Do I say “Bishop so-and-so” or do I address him as “your grace” or how?

Examples would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Your should address him in your letter as “Your Excellency”.

So …

Bishop so-and-so
bishop of …
address
city, state

Dear Your Excellency

The Most Reverend Xxxx X. Xxxxxx
Bishop of Xxxxx
Address
City, State, Zip

Your Excellency:

At least that’s what it says under “Forms of Address” in my Webster’s Seventh New Collegiate Dictionary.

Betsy

Respected Mr. Bishop,

Blessings of God Almighty unto you and all of us.

I want to right a letter to you, …

… Regards,

Faith full,

Slave of Almighty God.

Can I ask why you are writing the bishop with this question and not going to your priest. Bishops usually pass off this kind of question back to the parish priest to respond to.

And it may be different in England. I think “your Grace” would be more appropriate there?

Because my priests have given me conflicting answers. I explained all of that to the bishop without pointing any fingers at who said what.

I want to start my Bishop letter as,

Dear, Dear Brother so and so ---------------------, would it be correct.

Although it might not actually offend the bishop, it would not be correct. The proper forms are further up in the thread.

However, I just noticed that you list your religion as “Christian.” If you are part of a non-Catholic community writing to your own non-Catholic bishop, it might be acceptable to use the form you suggested.

If you are a Catholic, I would recommend calling the Bishop by his title (Bishop) or by a term given to him (Your Grace or Your Excellency). Calling him brother almost desecrates his role.

If you are not a Catholic, calling him Bishop ______ would be most correct. I can’t speak for Protestant methods of entitlement, so I won’t continue to try.
