He’s an arch-conservative, yes, but is he a Traditionalist Catholic?

In his position, it wouldnt be wise or politically expedient for him to be a “traditionalist” Catholic, in the sense it is usally used.

I think the best we can say is that he has the interests and wishes of traditionalists sincerely close to his heart.

I doubt people can really lump the Pope, of all people, into a category. Especially given that I doubt anyone on this forum (or most people in the world generally) known even 5% of what one should know before even thinking of deciding.

Ave Maria Purissima!

Remember, Benedict XVI is the pope of the ENTIRE Church, not just those who cling to the OF, who prefer the EF, or any other party.

I think he’d like to be. But he can’t. He’s got to attend to the spiritual needs of all Catholics, not forgetting the Third World where our rad trad vs left-wing trendy debates are not conducted in the same manner.

Of course it depends how you define it but I think he is. The thing is that he can’t fully express it because any too fast, inorganic and not carefully planned changes may cause schisms and other problems like it happened in the past. I think the freeing up of the Extraordinary Mass was one step to reconnect the Church with it’s past where this link has been severed.

Call this a prophecy if you’d like, but Benedict will be remembered as the pontiff who saved the Church from yet another great snare of the enemy.

👍

To say that he is arch-conservative is to ignore his entire history. He was a progressive at Vatican 2 and has strongly supported Vatican 2 since then. That is not what I would call an arch-conservative. And given the problems some of those who call themselves Traditionalists have with Vatican 2, I probably would not call him a Traditionalist.

Yet he did admit to being wrong then.

I love Pope Benedict XVI and I pray for him every day because he is under a ton of pressure and has a huge responsibility before God as the head of the Church! I agree with what someone else said on here, that he was more liberal before and during Vatican II but I think he is slowly beginning to see all the bad fruits from the “new orientation.” Even though he isn’t perfect (none of us are anyway), he is still our pope and we ought to pray for him and encourage him rather than scrutinize every little thing he does. May Our Blessed Mother protect him and obtain the grace he needs to do the Lord’s will! Amen.

While labels serve a function of convenience, I think the Holy Father is the one who should be exempt from them. I do think those who style themselves as traditionalist, orthodox or even moderate will find little to complain about under his leadership. I know that I am highly impressed so far with him, both since he became pope and in his earlier writings.

I don’t consider Benedict XVI as traditionalist but i can say he is a TRUE CATHOLIC!!!

Reading his works and observing his acts, I think Pope Benedict has the Catholic “mind” in spades. I’ll bet he loves Vat II as well as the pre -Vat II church for what it was.
