In the Fransiscan church which I attended, the vigil mass was 4 hours long. We had 86 people baptised, 7 people received into communion, and 85 confirmed. The deacon chanted the exsultet very beautifully. 4 readings from the old testament were read which is the norm in my part of the world. The baptism however, sounded like entertainment show, with people clapping and “woohoo”-ing all over the place. Some newly baptised also add to the excitement by screaming “Amen” or “Alleluia” right after the deacon is done with the threefold drowning. The songs are mostly from the “Breaking Bread 2010”.(I wonder why they use an American book halfway round the world from the US) The chant “Veni Creator Spiritus” was chanted in Latin during the confirmation, but other than that,it’s your usual modern songs, with the exception of Panis Angelicus and Hallelujah by Handel. In the end the priest blessed some hot crossed buns and it was distributed to us as we leave the church. Around 2000 people filled the 800seat church. They do prepare seats outside, but it was raining cats and dogs, and the canopy failed. All in all, i’m quite happy with the mass.
