Thank you for starting this thread. In reading other peopleās responses and in trying to write a charitable response, I was able to think more objectively about my relationship with my in-laws. I can honestly say my husbandās family treats me like a member of the family, but that isnāt saying our relationship is everything I hoped it would be (or even good.)Iāve been with my DH for over 14 years (dating, engaged, married)
My relationship with my in-laws is okā¦we are cordial, we get along most of the time. I see my MIL and FIL at least every 2 weeks, and my SIL a little less frequently. My BIL I see the most infrequently.
But we arenāt close āfriendsā. Most of the time it doesnāt bother me, but lately Iāve been thinking about it and sort of feel sad.
I believe they think we are odd, because we are practicing Catholics so if we go on a Sunday to visit and say weāll be over after Mass, they will comment:shrug:
Anyway, are we supposed to be close friends? Does any one have a good close relationship with the in-laws? How did you get to that point? Does it depend how close your spouse is to them?
Iām just curious, maybe Iām doing something wrong? I tend to be shyā¦maybe thatās part of the reason,(

What is your husbandās reaction to those statements? Do you have children? How harmful is that going to be when they hear their grandparentsā obvious hatred for the Church? Iād probably limit time spent with them.At least they donāt refer to Catholicism as āthe cultā, and whenever someoneās religion is mentioned, they donāt say āIs he a Christian or Catholic, because you know thatās differentā, and when discussing their unmarried child they say āWell, as long as she doesnāt marry someone from the Catholic Cult, sheāll be fineā or whenever doing something like blessing food, ask ādoes your cult do this, too?ā, or ask ādoes your cult have a bible, too?ā Oh, itās a barrel of fun to be Catholic in the rural South.
Iāll tell ya the secret to fabulous relations⦠live 8000 miles away! Most of my in laws live in the Philippines, tho a few in N. Carolina. We do all get along great, but simply canāt get together often enoughā¦Iāve been with my DH for over 14 years (dating, engaged, married)

And it is even more fun to give it back in spades. With a smile, of course. At least they donāt refer to Catholicism as āthe cultā, and whenever someoneās religion is mentioned, they donāt say āIs he a Christian or Catholic, because you know thatās differentā, and when discussing their unmarried child they say āWell, as long as she doesnāt marry someone from the Catholic Cult, sheāll be fineā or whenever doing something like blessing food, ask ādoes your cult do this, too?ā, or ask ādoes your cult have a bible, too?ā Oh, itās a barrel of fun to be Catholic in the rural South.
