How were the saints able to witness Heaven while still alive on Earth?

There are a few stories of saints being taken to Heaven or hell while still alive on Earth during a private revelation. The revelation ends and the saint “snaps out” of it. St. Theresa of Avila is one saint that comes to mind.

These places are eternal and outside of time.

How is it possible for the saint to be in Heaven temporarily if “temporarily” is a measure of time? If they were truly in Heaven, wouldn’t they be there eternally?

Maybe…& this is just me…maybe they were privileged - given the grace - to get a foretaste of what life is like in the eternal & transcendent - where time & the laws of nature no longer apply & the body is immortal - spiritual…

I don’t take the ‘taken to Heaven’ literally. In Revelation, St John says 'I was caught up in spirit on the Lord’s day" so it is along these same lines. An ecstasy of spirit.
