How wholesome must our entertainment be?

When I was a kid, my parents wouldn’t let me watch “Cheers” because it had “too much sex in it”.

Cheers is excruciatingly tame compared to today’s “standards”. I didn’t read the whole thread to know if you revealed which show you were talking about when you started this, but it sounds like an episode that I saw of “How I met your mother”. My wife & I watch the show, but I can’t believe it comes on at 8:00. It’s FAR raunchier than anything that was on when I was a kid. Heck, compared to that, Cheers might look like it was about a monastery instead of a bar…ok, maybe not quite THAT far.

Anyway, I don’t watch TV, except for Lost (whic, I almost wish they’d get FOUND already), CSI, and History Channel (although I have to turn off History when they do any shows on Christianity because they seem to have a big anti-Christian slant).

You said you don’t have the link, but would you have any information you could provide (approximate date, title of article) which I could possibly use to find it?

Ok, I’ll change that to my earthly father. He was a very godly man. If I wouldn’t have it on were he on the couch, I shouldn’t have it on.

Another way I look at things is that there is a division between good and evil. I can stay as far to the good side as possible or I can start moving toward the evil side. I may still be ON the good side, but how close to the side of the road do you drive before you run into the ditch.
 
If whatever show you’re watching tempts you, or causes you to struggle with your faith, or just plain bothers you, don’t watch it. I stopped watching tv almost completely for the last reason. Every once in awhile, a show would have an episode that had something against the faith. It would always take me a couple days to kind of ‘root out’ whatever message it had tried to impart, and I would have sleepless, uncomfortable nights because of it. Tv bypasses your ‘thinking’ part of your brain; it’s very subliminal. So, I think even if the show wasn’t tempting you as you were watching it, whatever anti-Christian messages it might be trying to impart could come back to haunt you, so to speak. I’d rather read a book for relaxation… at least then you can pause, say, “Hang on, that’s not quite right,” and think about it, rather than being swept along by the show until it’s finished. And this question does seem similar to the “how far is too far?” question applied to relationships… you shouldn’t want to test those boundaries, because you will only find your boundary after you step over it, and then it will be too late.

Not to mention, tv in general is not something to have too much of, but how much time spent watching it is okay is a topic for another thread…

that sounds like my parents right now:p when i was 4 my mom was not goin to let me watch spongebob because it showed his underware well ,she has loosened up a little since then:)
