Can a Pope be removed from His office? What would the process be if needed. Do you have information related to this.

Yes, the pope may resign if he feels he cannot continue in office. Only he can remove himself, There was speculation that past popes had letters of resignation already made out and sealed, only to be opened under certain circumstances.

Hi Rich,

There is no provision for the removal of a pope.

Canon Law provides for “caretaker” government while the Holy See is vacant or “impeded” (for example if the Pope suffered from Alzeimer’s disease). But neither in Canon Law nor in Pope John Paul II’s document on vacancy and elections ,Universi Dominici Gregis, is there a provision for removal.

It is interesting to note that it has never been needed in 1970 years.

This is true, however, what if there were a situation where the Pope had alzheimers, and wanted to continue in his day to day duties. Would this be able to be prevented? This is really a new issue since in the past most people died before they lost their mental faculties, in recrent years it is much more common for it to happen the other way around.

All I know is Pope John Paul II was a wonderful testimony to the Church’s fight against Euthanasia. Our priest said that his mental faculties were there long after his physical abilities deteriorated.

I would suggest that God has to take some responsibility in all this. It appears that He has done alright so far.
