Is it more important to be a Catholic or a Chrsitian? Why?

Matthew 16: 15 He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” Simon Peter replied, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” And Jesus answered him, “Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jona! For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven. And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the powers of death shall not prevail against it. Since both teach different things, there are 2 possibilities:

1. Both are wrong
2. One is right and one is wrong

It is impossible for both to be right. Therefore, who do you trust to give you the truth and/or interpret the bible?

If you trust yourself, how do you know?

1. You have a bible that has been correctly translated?
2. You have a bible that has the correct number of books?
3. You have not been deceived by Satan?
4. You have not been influenced by others who are well intentioned but are wrong?

If anyone is to be totally honest with them self, they will have to admit they cannot answer these questions without the help of some human being. Faith comes from “hearing” other human beings.

Reading scripture enhances ones faith. It does not give one faith.

Excellent reply BUT hearing the word of God is not simply listening to the word of God. Hearing the word of God requires qualifed explaination. Not something that we can do on our own.

How do you know when an error occurs or not? Also, do you think Paul was speaking of only the written word? Or could it mean:

First Letter of Paul to the Thessalonians… Verse 2:13 says: “And for this reason we too give thanks to God unceasingly, that,in receiving the word of God from hearing us, you received not a human word but, as it truly is, the word of God, which is now at work in you who believe.”

Looks like its also verbal… Agree?

I would say there’s no conflict. Catholicism is the fullness of Christianity and I think being Christian necessarily includes the obligation to be the best possible follower of Christ you can be. There are more helps to achieving this in the Catholic Church than any other.

It’s a bit like someone who commits to pursuing a career as a doctor, lawyer, teacher or scientist, then owes it to themselves, their colleagues and those affected by their work, to be the best doctor, teacher, lawyer or scientist that they can be.

Me and my husband affiliated with a evangelical Church in which people regularly gave their testimony of ’ how they got saved ’
Quite a number of testimonies started with " I used to be a Catholic, but now I’m a Christian"
One of the ’ entertaining ’ characters there was a group leader who used to mock Benediction swinging a ladies handbag, calling it an incense holder
A few months later our Wednesday prayer group for his wife and three children whom he had deserted to run off with another woman

Actually you seem to miss the point.

The Bible is a Catholic Book as God intended it for His Catholic Church.

As the bible was completely written by the end of the First Century and the ONLY Church was Christ Catholic Church, this point is not debateable.

Jesus Himself has given His personal Word that the Holy Spirit would remain with Her [The Church] “FOREVER.” To insure Her Truth, to guide and protect her from error on all matters relating to Faith and Morals.

Therefore the only correct interpetation MUST, in an absolute sense, come through the Church for which it was written.

In so far as this condition is met; the tranlastion too is “inspired” which can be assured when it does not contradict Catholic Church Teaching. In order for this to be so, such translations are more than merely human understanding.

It is when humanity trys to by-pass the “safety net” installed by God Himself, [His Catholic Church] that translation is ONLY a human endeavor, and thus often misses the point.

Hi,

The point is that God intended interpation of His Divinely Inspired Word, in far more than “human understanding” when done in conjunction with What The Churches teaches and practices. It too is Divenly directed and it’s truth cannot be in error on matters of Faith and Morals. Cannot Be! God gave us His Word on it:thumbsup:

In order to be Catholic one has to be a Cristian first. To be a Christian means one believes in Jesus Christ. However, It is only by the Grace of God that one comes to the fullness of the truth. Grace, comes from faith in Jesus Christ, and it comes from the Father. The Cathilic Church offers the 7 Sacraments and it is apon recieveing these Sacraments that Grace is poured out. I am sure there are other way’s to obtain Gods Grace’s but these are the neccesities to obtain further Graces. Baptism (Jesus commanded this), Confirmation (Confirm your faith daily) Confession (to realize your faults and to change) Communion (to receive Christ) Holy Orders (to give up everything and follow Him) Marriage (to become one with your wife/husband and in union with God) Last Rites (to die in the GRACE of God).
I like my chances better being a Catholic rather than just a Christian.
