Love is defined as “willing the good of someone,” but how exactly does one will the good of God?

I can love God, I don’t know exactly how I’m doing it. I mean, do get that loving involves seeking union with Him, and doing His will, but I’m having difficulty fitting it all together and I think I’m missing a few things. What is the definition of “loving God” and how does it square with love as “willing the good of another?”

Ok so I’m not a theologian nor especially bright or learned, but I can think of one area where we can “will the good of” in God’s case. God loves us. It must be so painful for Him when any of us are lost. So by taking care of our souls and the souls of our neighbors, by going to Mass, regular sacraments, prayers, sacrifices, acts of mercy, etc. we are showing love for God. We love Him by loving others, avoiding sin, and making reparation for sins. “Whatsoever you do for the least of my people, that you do unto me.”

Someone with more learning on the subject could probably give a more thorough answer, but that’s my thought on the matter 🙂

Haha what took me a long paragraph to say, you were able to convey in a single sentence!

The simplest definition of love that I know is, “an expression of value coupled with an act of will.” By this concept, I see the immense beauty and value In the action of the Creator of all, and I choose to respond to it with my life. From that simple foundation, I build my relationship of love with my Creator, and by association, with all His creation.
Don’t know if that makes sense, but it works for me.
Shalom

If you love me you will keep my commandments
John 14:15.

Since Jesus is God this should apply, but of course it could be debated whether it defines or flows from our love.
