How would the Orthodox react if a newly elected pope ever took the name of Andrew?

It would not lead to a mass reunion movement, if that’s what you’re wondering.

Orthodox do NOT have the devotion to St. Andrew that Roman Catholics do to St. Peter.

Are you asking because of the fact that no Pope has ever taken the name “Peter II”?

Well, Popes have of course taken the names of John and Paul, can’t offhand recall that any of the other Apostles’ names have been used though. So it shouldn’t be an issue.

Doesn’t the current Ecumenical Patriarch go by the Apostolic name of Bartholomew anyway?

Sometimes popes take names indicating what kind of a pontificate they would have.

Would the choice of a name like Andrew indicate that that particular pope might be persuing all avenues at reunification?

I just wonder if most Orthodox would view it as a good thing or as a slight.

Would people be offended if a pope took the name of Thomas?

Would Epsicopalians or other Protestants be offended if a pope took the name of James?

I think that Andrew would be a good name for a pope.

The Orthodox might be more impressed if he took the name Peter II.

To say nothing about those who subscribe to the so-called Prophecies of St. Malachi.

It’s more of a “what’s in a name” thing; there have been 6 Popes with the name Paul, and around 23 or so (not counting the anti-Popes, of course) with the name John, yet it didn’t lead to a mass exodus of people suddenly scampering towards Rome…
