Suppose you are responsible for choosing a bodyguard for the US president (Not Trump… or Hillary… someone you would gladly vote for :)). One of the candidates is a very well trained Secret Service agent. The other one is a perfectly programmed robot. Let’s suppose that they are equally qualified for the job - which is not really true, since a robot is much faster than any human can be. On the other hand the human bodyguard has “free will”, what the robot does not have. Suppose that the robot was created by a programmer guru, so that there will be no “bugs” in the working of the bodyguard.

Which one would you choose? And, of course, why?

The robot, but not for the reason listed. Of course free will is important, and the human Secret Service agent chose this line of work, but a robot is not worth more than human life. Human life should be protected and preserved, first and foremost. The robot does not have a soul, the human does. The robot was not made in the image of God, the human was.

Just…I mean…I have seen enough science fiction to know where picking robots goes.

The secret service agent. Nowadays, more than ever, people need jobs.

Hi,
Unless the robot was a humanoid Avatar that has fast mobility, I would go w the Avatar. BUT AND A BIG BUT…They weigh a ton. So Avatar sees trouble and jumps and covers President w his body and crushes President to death??? HMM
NOW, car is a total space age security device that is programmed to sense hostile ferlings. He, then, can address Secret Service and drive off fast enough to fly. A high tech secret CHITTY CHITTYBANG BANG.

May God help us to bring peace to the world, so protecting ourselves will not be a concern.

The secret service agent; I’m not to the point I can place 100% of my trust in technology. I’d be worried there would be a “glitch” in the system not found out until my untimely death!

Irresistibly am reminded of the “Fantasia” part where the magicked broom goes totally ape… Always rather scared me did that…

I believe in this hypothetical scenario, there is literally no reason not to choose the robot and choosing a human would be a waste of life. A robot having free will or not is completely irrelevant. It’s a robot, so it should be used however humans see fit.

I pick the human agent over a robot. He can analyze people in a crowd using his experience & common sense! 👍

The question begs itself. What on earth does “perfectly programmed” mean?

This has got to be the silliest thread ever at Catholic Answers. 😦

Thank you for all your replies. I was interested in seeing what kind of supporting arguments will be presented for either side.

Here are a few more to consider.
  1. Face recognition software allows the robot to identify anyone who is a known hostile - so a robot would be much more reliable to filter out possible assassins.
  2. The software employed by Watson proved to be much smarter than the best human players in Jeopardy, where one had to come to correct conclusion from insufficient and purposefully misleading data.
  3. Robot cannot be intimidated, humans can be.
  4. Robots cannot be blackmailed, humans can be. (No children, no relatives)
  5. Robots do not need “down”-time (sleep or rest), humans do.
  6. Robots are much more reliable than humans. Observe the newly emerging driverless cars. It is a very new technology, and even in its infancy so far there was only ONE accident due to computer error, vs. millions of accidents due to human errors.
Something for you to ponder.
