How would you defend Jesus' name when others take His name in vain?

Greetings,

Whenever I hear co-workers take our Lord’s name in vain, I cringe. But, at the end of the day, before they leave work, I take them aside and ask them to refrain from using His name in vain. What you do? How would you react? What would you say? Or would you say anything at all? Thanks to all who reply, I could use the advice.

Dominus Vobiscum,
Rocco

I just calmly say “please don’t take my Lord’s name in vain.”
I don’t make a big deal about it, I just mention it when I hear it, and go on with what I was doing at the time.

I make the sign of the cross and ask them to not do it. It has become a non-issue with where I work with workers. They stopped. Now customers are another problem and I am not sure how to handle this.

But now to get co-workers to stop other swearing is harder. Sh**. “f”, and a few others seem to be used regularly. It is in their every day vocabulary.

i simply tell them not to take the Lord’s name in vain. Simple as that. i don’t like it and it bugs me when people say it.

Sometimes I just go, “I believe you mean [insert something fitting here].” Alot of the time though, I think they think I am joking.

You guys are braver then I am. I wish I could get the guts up to tell them not to do that. I do, however, try to say a silent prayer of repairation for them, such as “Blest be the name of the Lord,” and ask God to forgive them for using His name in vain.

Cursing at work is not so much a problem for me (I work at an elementary school, and thankfully, the teachers and students don’t make a regular habit of cursing. 🙂

However, my own dear husband and some of his friends and family…😦

A lot of people who use that kind of language could care less about “using the Lord’s name in vain.” They’ll just think you’re being a prude if you use that approach.

What works for me is to say something like this: “Dude! Language! Have some respect for the religious nut in the building (me).” The respone every time is “oh, sorry!” That way they don’t feel judged AND they remember that there is certain speach that Christians don’t like to hear.

In other words, keep it polite and make it out YOU being offended instead of THEM being offensive. 🙂

I certainly don’t do it all the time, its usually just with one of my bosses at work who goes crazy with it sometimes…😦

I like this one 👍 It also has a little cute humour in it, which my boss would appreciate. Its funny I also dont have much courage to tell people (at work) to refrain from using His name in vain but I have St Columbus calendars hanging on my wall with a crucifix, they know I am religious. However with my family everytime I hear them cursing/saying it I always say “Leave Him out of it”. I once read a lady actually would say “WHERE, WHERE IS HE???”

My old manager where I used to work would always punch us in the shoulder and say, “Don’t blame the man for your problems!” If it was Sunday, then it would be an especially hard punch and he’d say, “Don’t blame the man for your problems on His day!”

Rocco,

Whenever somebody mentions Jesus’ name, I reply “Praised be His Holy Name!”

Well, If they use his name as an exclaimation (which many seem to do) I just act suprised and say: "Is he here! shocked look and they get the message usually.

Lol. I’m definately going to have to steal this one from you and use it sometime:p .

our catechists immediately say “have mercy on us” when someone uses the name of God or Jesus in vain.

When one of my co-workers gets mad or aggravated and let’s loose with our Lord’s name, I look at them calmly and say, “Well don’t blame HIM. It’s not His fault.” Or if they just holler it out, I’ll say, “Oh, is He here? I wanna talk to Him…”
