How would you feel if priests wore jeans & t-shirts to celebrate Mass in church?

I have been to non-denominational churches in which wearing jeans was the norm, however, I would be shocked :eek: if I saw a priest holding mass in jeans. Seems un-Catholic, IMHO.

Hmmmm…didn’t think a priest could wear jeans; I thought they always had to wear the black pants.

Nope, it is suggested, but not mandatory, our chancelor barely wears his collor let alone clerical garb, unless it is deemed necessary. It is way more lax than it was 20 years ago.

I think this whole thing was meant to be more of a hypothetical. Maybe “how would you feel if your priest wore a tie-dye vestment, one with polka dots and pom-poms (remember, I live in the former clown mass diocese) or smiley faces all over it and flip flops?” would be better question.

I know what you mean. My son started Catholic 1st grade this year and there was a new family welcome cook-out. If someone hadn’t introduced me I’d have never known I ws standing next to Fr Craig. He was in shorts, flip flops and a t shirt. The other week he was standing in the hall during school hours with jeans and a t-shirt on. Maybe it was his day off but I couldn’t resist. “Out of uniform again eh Father?”

pretty slack if you ask me. I thought wearing the garb was part of the deal. When in the public eye dress in the clothes.

Same with some of these younger nuns. Imagine the trauma of some young man who hits on the cute babe he sees in the mall only to find out she’s a nun. Yikes!! I don’t think Sr Mary Vincent was ever young or cute. (I’m kidding Sister) Though who would ever think of her in that way when you saw her in her habit.

But I digress.

Back to the topic. I dress as nicely as I can on any given week. Someweeks the time runs out and I don’t get my pants ironed. I think the Lord would rather I wear nice black jeans than wrinkled dress pants. Hmm sloth, should’ve done that ironing instead of watching another Law & Order re-run. quick, off to the confessional.

In case any of you haven’t picked up on it I’m still a bit of a wiseacre. earned me plenty of twisted ears back in the day. Poor Sr St Vincent she had to be 80, but tough as granny from the Beverly Hillbillies. eyes squinted and her knuckles white gripping the pointer… “Mr Schroder, come up to me and pray on the way”

Aah the good old days.

Seriously, since I came back to the flock last Ash Wednesday it took a little er persuasion to get the boy (6) to want to come to church. I think he ultimately decided it was better to go sit in Church for an hour than not to be able to sit for the rest of the day. 😉

Now, just a few months later, he picks out his own clothes and comes into my room and asks to borrow a tie. even when I declare a “casual” day (Khakis & polo) he still wants to wear his blazer. He knows it’s a special event.

My daughter (2) loves to get to carry her little purse and wear the shiny shoes.

Bottom line… Wear whatever you want, no skin off my butt. I’m not the one whos going to be sitting in Purgatory for disrespect.

I’ve heard Mass in different countries where poverty was very high. In those countries, both the laity and the clergy always seemed to make an effort to come to Mass dressed in the best manner that they were able too. I’ve seen the laity in sandals and shorts in the Philippines and in San Diego. In the Philippines it was all they had, in San Diego it was cool breeze buddy. I’ve seen a priest in Honduras serve Mass in sandals and almost everyone in the congregation barefoot. But that was all they had. They were as presentable as they were able to be. I think that is the distinction. Some try to look as good as they can and others just don’t care. You know how it is: Jesus loves me as I am so who cares how I dress and whose business is it anyway, only God can judge me!!

I’m not sure if I should start a new thread but I totally agree with you about the young nuns. I was taught by Salesian Sisters who still wear a habit. I also was taught by Sisters of Charity who don’t wear a habit anymore. I think the Sisters of Charity try to fit in with the laity which can cause trouble like you just mentioned. Why can’t they go back to wearing habits? Do they feel it to be embarracing to wear something that shows an outward consecration to God. :rolleyes:

the rubrics explicitly demand certain vestments be worn by the priest. they are silent on garb of the congregation. not the same thing.as a grandmother I am thrilled anytime my grandchildren come to see me, no matter what they are wearing, no matter how much their body piercings make me cringe. If one of them showed up in a suit and tie or a nice dress in my honor it would, however, make me pleased, proud, honored and I would feel beloved.
 
As long as the Priest is wearing the proper vestments during Mass I could care less what he is wearing under them. 🙂
 
Why is everyone so concerned about what everyone else is wearing. Can’t we go to church with a humble heart and not worry about what everyone else thinks. I wear (nice) jeans to church most of the time. when I do get dressed up it’s because I know it is what is expected. Not a very good reason if you ask me.

Why is the idea that getting dressed up is expected a not good reason to do it?
We are expected in a polite society to do certain things. You are expected to return a greeting from a stranger, you are expected not to litter, you are expected to stop a small child from hurting himself. Some things you are just expected to do.
You are going to see the King of Kings. Perhaps you should rethink WHY you are getting dressed up. It’s easy to say, Jesus just cares what’s in my heart, but how do you know? Really? Because you feel it? It’s not about you.

You are showing a good example to the younger generation. As I stated before, good example or bad example, the little ones notice.

In my parish, you would stick out like a sore thumb at the 9:30am mass. At the 8:30pm, you wouldn’t at all but that is not the reason to forget looking your best. Jesus is there no matter what.

If your best is Jeans, wear them. If not, why would you think of your comfort over giving Him that little discomfort? Give it up for the Poor Soul. That’s what I tell my kids in their itchy clothes. You’ll have a friend in Heaven.

WHAT IS BEST? I WAS TAUGHT THAT MASS WAS A CELEBRATION AND YOU WERE NOT TO FAST ON SUNDAY.
THAT’S WHY THERE NOT COUNTED AS DAYS OF LENT. I CELEBRATE BETTER IN JEANS.

This thread makes me think about how St. Francis caste off all his clothes, in public no less, to be free of commitment to anyone and to go and serve the Lord.

I didn’t actually say your work clothes. What I said was that people should wear their best *when they can * for Our Lord. I’m not understanding why this is such a negative concept. I’m also not sure how clothes make it easier or harder to worship. What is it that one can do in one kind of clothes that one can’t do in another at Mass?
