How would you feel if you had to live in the U.K?

Are chavs just the latest slang term for hooligans? Are they the modern version of mods, rockers, teddy boys, and skinheads?

No no, ‘‘Chav’’ is a slang term adopted into popular usage which usually means teenagers from working class white backgrounds who own ridiculous amounts of fake gold jewellery, drink cheap booze in parks and start random violence.

So hooligans they may be, mods and rockers they aint.

Ok. It seems like they are white kids trying to imitate American black rap culture, only their “bling” isn’t real.

Sometimes the blings real, depends who they mug.

Chavs actually tend to be pretty racist. They don’t so much imitate ‘‘black rap culture’’ as far as claiming it for themselves.

The kids who imitate rap culture here don’t give chavs the time of day.

So are the chavs the latest incarnation of skinheads, then? After all, skinheads originated as imitators of Jamaican music (ska, reggae, etc.) and were not racist at first, then they became racist later on. Other than appearance, the behaviour of the chavs and skinheads seems similar.

Ever so slight, but it sounds like it might be regional US accent if the listener isn’t familiar with Canadian accents. Unless they’re French Canadians, who sound French.

I don’t think that’s true. It depends on where the American is from. I have a hugely different accent than Canadians do. It’s because I’m from southern California. People in the north have quite a similar accent to Canada. The Southern accent and accents such as the different New York ones and Boston are nothing like it.
 
Hi Rita 88 - I think my position was more that Im sad that I live in a country that has such a high rate of promiscuity particularly in those under 25 who are catching STDs - the whole abstinance message seems to have passed most of our young by in this country - the abortion rate is rising, teen pregnancy is rising and STDs are rising so something is not working!! And the bowls of condoms dont seem to do the trick either!

Poor chavs! they’re really not that bad, just very ignorant and silly, with their fake designer gear and habit of putting “innit” and the end of every sentence.
 
Good grief! You Americans crack me up! Brits don’t speak English? Ummm…remember anything about world history? Oh, right, only American history is interesting. (relax…I’m teasing you; the perception of Americans by “outsiders” is that you’re pretty self-absorbed and uninformed about anything not having to do with the U.S.)

Seriously though, as far as accents go, Canada doesn’t have just one dialect anymore than the U.S does. Small town Ontario sounds very different from Toronto. The Maritimes, particularly Newfoundland has a distinctive sound, as do the prairies and BC.

I love British accents, (you always sound smart even if you’re talking drivel, provided it’s with a British accent) and manage to understand most of them, but you’re right, Newcastle presents a challenge!

I hope to get to England some day. I’m a huge footie fan, and very much hope to see ManUtd. play. If I could find a job, I’d like to spend some time over there.

Of course Britian no longer has many who speak with a received pronunciation (like Professor Higgins), and the broad cockney Eliza uses has moved on a little, but the core of the film’s purpose, to illustrate that class division is mainly by one’s accent is still true.
 
Well, I LOVE it here:thumbsup: ! I first moved to the UK in 1997, lived in Stockwell (South London) for a year, then 2 years in Vauxhall (South London), then me and hubby bought our first house in Mitcham (again, South London) and then we moved to the beautiful West Country where our daughters were born! We currently live in the Border City of Carlisle and the people are so friendly, I really feel at home:D

I understand the overseas perception, and I won’t get into why they think that way. However, most non-Canadians won’t recognize the differences in accent. They aren’t as distinct as other differences. By the way, I despise US history. It’s way too short. I had no problem understanding British accents until I saw the movie “Snatch.” I have no idea what their accents were, but they were so thick I couldn’t understand it until the second time around.
 
I seem to remember reading not long ago that there are something like a quarter of a million Americans resident in the UK.

I actually think I would enjoy living in England. I would hope that if I ever did, I could lose the midwestern US accent and get a nice British accent (proper Queen’s English accent). I sound much like a reporter on US television. As for accents, ever notice that no matter where you travel, the reporters on the US TV news always sound like midwesterners?

Yes!!! I’ve always wondered if reporters took a diction class or something in order to flatten out their regional inflections. It’s pretty odd, isn’t it?
