Interestingly enough, even today’s Catholic Church admits that this is a correct
interpretation. In her Catechism, paragraph 424, we read: “Moved by the grace
of the Holy Spirit and drawn by the Father, we believe in Jesus and confess:
‘You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.’ On the rock of this faith
confessed by St Peter, Christ built his Church [emphasis mine].” Truly, the rock
is the faith confessed by Peter. How then does the Catholic Church contend
that “The Lord made Simon alone, whom He named Peter, the rock of his
Church”?

Quite easily.

The Rock is both Peter’s profession of faith and himself. Christ built His Church on both of these things.

It doesn’t have to be “either/or” - it’s both.

Personally, I think the ideas expressed in the second line of CCC paragraph 424 could have been phrased better, and in fact were in paragraph 552:552 Simon Peter holds the first place in the college of the Twelve; Jesus entrusted a unique mission to him. Through a revelation from the Father, Peter had confessed: “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” Our Lord then declared to him: “You are Peter, and on this rock I will build my Church, and the gates of Hades will not prevail against it.” Christ, the “living Stone”, thus assures his Church, built on Peter, of victory over the powers of death. Because of the faith he confessed Peter will remain the unshakable rock of the Church. His mission will be to keep this faith from every lapse and to strengthen his brothers in it.
It is made very clear here that Peter is the rock and was made the rock **because of **his great faith. Additionally, paragraph 881 states:881 The Lord made Simon alone, whom he named Peter, the “rock” of his Church. He gave him the keys of his Church and instituted him shepherd of the whole flock. “The office of binding and loosing which was given to Peter was also assigned to the college of apostles united to its head.” This pastoral office of Peter and the other apostles belongs to the Church’s very foundation and is continued by the bishops under the primacy of the Pope.
Notice also footnote 9 to the phrase in question in paragraph 424. It references several excerpts from the Sermons of Pope St. Leo the Great, one of Peter’s greatest successors. We read in one of these (Sermon 51):
To strengthen, therefore, their most wholesome knowledge of this belief, the Lord had asked His disciples, among the various opinions of others, what they themselves believed, or thought about Him: whereat the Apostle Peter, by the revelation of the most High Father passing beyond things corporeal and surmounting things human by the eyes of his mind, saw Him to be Son of the living God, and acknowledged the glory of the Godhead, because he looked not at the substance of His flesh and blood alone; and with this lofty faith Christ was so well pleased that he received the fulness of blessing, and was endued with the holy firmness of the inviolable Rock on which the Church should be built and conquer the gates of hell and the laws of death, so that, in loosing or binding the petitions of any whatsoever, only that should be ratified in heaven which had been settled by the judgment of Peter.

The Church Fathers write about Peter’s faith as the Rock; they also write about Peter himself as the Rock; they also write about Christ as the Rock.

The question has been answered adequately I am happy to see. To the OP, if you are not familiar with him, the author of that website is Dr. Joe Mizzi, who has posted on this forum before. He has had numerous exchanges with John Martignoni as well, which are archived in some of John’s newsletters at biblechristiansociety.com.

I have also had exchanges with him and am sorry to say he has done nothing BUT misrepresent Catholic teaching. I have called him out on this. I have asked him to stop bearing false witness against the Church. He has apparently not ceased. Prayers for him are appreciated.

I thank you all for your responses, this helps me greatly. I am somewhat of an amateur apologist, and this one kind of confused me, I appreciate your help.

I first came accross his website a few days ago, and I was surprised that it is somewhat different than many of the anti-Catholic sites I have seen. He doesn’t come off as a loony like many of them do, however he still manages to misrepresent Catholic teaching, just in a more subtle way than many others.

I downloaded his book (for free) Test All Things. I was thinking about making a website just for responces to his site. The first thing I am doing is going through this book, and commenting on it. I see Joe Mizzi as being more dangerous than many others because he portrays himself as a former Catholic who “knows” Catholicism. He takes a rather mild tone in his writing, and I think this might convince more people. I wonder how many people have been led astray by his misrepresentations.

Thanks for the links. I have looked at some of his posts on here already, and I will also check out biblechristiansociety.com.

Thank You,

Thank You,Yeah John Martignoni goes toe to toe with Mizzi fairly often.

Mizzi’s interpretation of the CCC is twisted all out of shape. He cherry picked that reference to make it appear that the church teaches something that it does not, or that it teaches error. However, as with a great many n-C/a-Cs it is refutable.

If you’d like some help with you potential project, let me know by PM or e-mail and I’ll see what I can do. 👍

**I’m so happy to see several of you referring to John Martignoni. He and I attend the same church. He is a good friend of mine. I wish we could get his website posted all over the place!

He offers so many free materials to Catholics and Non-Catholics who are seeking the truth.

My wife has given talks with me on this issue before, and I like how she puts it. She describes the rock as being Peter himself, Peter’s profession, and Christ–without whom the profession would be meaningless.

I’m trying not to be jealous… 😉 John Martignoni’s “One Church” CD is a lot of the reason I am Catholic today - I call it my “burning bush moment.” The Holy Spirit is doing a mighty work through him! 👍 😃

Hi, e-catholic!

…the problem is that too many Catholics seek reason and spirituality from outside of the Church… they think relativism and intellectualism instead of Faith and Obedience…

It is not surprising to me that anyone bent on twisting the Truth will use passages from the Holy Scriptures as well as from the Church’s Teachings and spin the text into their convoluted view of “Truth.”

Here’s what this fellow missed:

Jesus speaks to Kephas prior to His Death and Resurrection… Peter’s Faith (as that of the other ten disciples) was weak… why would Jesus build His Church on man’s weakness?

When Jesus speaks of building His Church He means on the man:

But I have prayed for thee, that thy faith fail not: and thou, being once converted, confirm thy brethren. (St. Luke 22:32)

Jesus is delegating His Authority/Position to Peter as He makes Peter responsible for the other disciples: the Church is united in Peter! This is also understood throughout the Gospels as Peter is always being placed/named as the first to do/follow Jesus. Even John, the disciple loved most by the Lord, when running to the Tomb races ahead of Peter only to yield entrance to him into the Tomb… and when the stories are told they make Peter the one called first by Jesus, as well as the one to whom He first appeared…

The Church understands the totality of Peter and thusly an inspired writer spoke of Peter’s Faith as the rock; yet, I am sure that no one who is truly Catholic believes that man stands alone or that his Faith does not Originate in Chirst! Peter is nothing, as no man is, but even so it is Christ Word that makes him kephas and it is Christ word that separates him from the other Apostles… and as Scriptures say:

So shall my word be, which shall go forth from my mouth: it shall not return to me void, but it shall do whatsoever I please, and shall prosper in the things for which I sent it. (Isaiah 55:11)

So are we to interpret Scriptures in a different understanding than Christ’s determination?

The thing that really bugs me about this guy is that he is undoubtedly leading people astray with his twisted truth. Being a former Catholic gives him even more power to do this, even though he has no idea what he is talking about.

Great 👍 Thank you for your (name removed by moderator)ut.😃

…yet this infestation has plagued the Church from her infancy… Here’s what St. Peter said about it:

“especially those who are governed by their corrupt bodily desires and have no respect for authority… All the same, these who only insult anything that they do not understand are not reasoning beings… they will quite certainly destroy themselves by their own work of destruction, and get their reward of evil for the evil that they do… men with an infinite capacity for sinning, they will seduce any soul which is at all unstable… They are under a curse. They have left the right path and wondered off… People like these are dried-up rivers, fogs swirling in the wind, and the dark underworld is the place reserved for them.” (2 St. Peter 2:10-17)

This, of course, does not limit our liability–we are called to be sentinels so we must pass the word and advise others of the evil that is being unleashed; making ourselves accessible to those who are weak in the Faith and providing them with answers to their quest for the Truth: One Body, One Baptism, One Lord, One Gospel, One Faith!
