After considering how best to create an inclusive academic calendar — either by removing all but state-mandated public school holidays or by recognizing additional holidays — the Howard County Board of Education has voted to close schools for students on a Muslim and a Hindu holiday, for the first time in the school system’s history.
“I am extremely pleased by the Board’s ability to discuss and unanimously agree to seek ways to recognize the diverse backgrounds of Howard County’s students and families,” said Board of Education Chairwoman Christine O’Connor. “We want to do our best to find flexibility within the calendar to provide opportunities for all students to experience all cultures within our community.”

I applaud this. It is good to see a public school system recognize that the first amendment is not a wall of separation between church and state. Here we have a school district willing bend to the religious free exercise rights of faithful people, and that a cultural literacy requires that the role of religion not be ignored in school, but must be a part of it.

Does the county have a very large population of Indian, Pakistani, or other immigrants to merit it, or are they simply being modern and hip?

what about Chinese New Year? where do you draw the line?
I’m insisting on the annual "Week of Honor for Southpaws ".

180 days of school. That’s essentially the bottom line. So if they want to give extra religious holidays, more power to them

since I am a southpaw, I will go for that!!! (except I am not in school anymore)

I wonder if Howard county is going to allow the Satanist religion and Atheist to have a school holiday?

Public schools have outlawed Jesus and prayer, changed the wording of state and federal Christian holidays to be political correct speech, because Christian titles offend?

Then pretend to be tolerant and accepting of other religions, as if to set a moral public example, to justify a legal (voted) bigotry between State and Church?

When did the Public Counties begin teaching morality to the public schools?, instead of setting a public example to follow their local state and federal laws?

Something tells me the voting demographics have changed or are changing in our public offices.
